Just wondering if you HAVE to use a primary puller? ANyone get theirs off without?
How much tension are the springs under? I want to freshen the primary and secondary springs, and just wondering if they'll fly out of there if I undo the bolts, without a puller attached.

Both springs are under pressure. Depending on what springs are in there, there's going to be some pressure (some way more than others). Hold on to that primary cover when loosening the bolts. You should invest in a puller. They're cheap and pay for themselves by keeping the aggravation and swearing down.

yeah...i guess.
I have a gear puller, but can't really use that on there. Yay, another tool I get to buy

No they won't fly off stock one at least. Just start unbolting the cover ( one bolt a little at a time then move onto the next ) hold your hand over the cover and it will come off.

this works for me when i tear them down on the bench.i use piece of threaded rod with a large washer and nut.tighten the washer and nut down to the clutch, loosen all the clutch bolts and the back the large washer/nut off.if you can find a piece of rod the same size and thread as the retaining bolt this may work for you.

I put the heel clickers grey spring in without pulling the clutch. Went out and plunked down my $40 for a clutch puller right after that.

I think RD has one for 19$...I used theirs when pulling my primary off, was pretty easy, but I did have to use a breaker bar.chilli said:yeah...i guess.

same with me redsnake... get my brother to stand on the clutch (hes not small, 260 lbs) lol and then i thread the bolts in... this year im making up a tool to compress it out of threaded rod, a lot less hassle i think, and easier on the hands

A 2 foot 1"x4"board down in the bellypan makes up the extra leverage needed to hold the cover so a buddy can start the bolts in . Done it quite a few times myself and it sure beats wrestling it on there by hand . JM2C !
It can be done with out removing it its just easier if you do. Get an EPI Puller if you get one. All other are inferior pullers and will bend or squat under pressure.

I used threaded rod and nuts to get it pulled down. The problem is there isn't enough room for the threaded rod around the side panel. With the heel clickers spring there is barely enough room to get the spring and the cover in there at the same time. Very difficult is a huge understatement. Thus the trip to the dealer for a puller. I was sure I would never get the red spring in there without the puller and the threaded rod on a bench.redsnake3 said:![]()
you must be superman, i gotta take my clutch off and put all my weight(over 200lbs) on it just to get the cover back on.
