Guys, Had the viper out today, Trails were pretty good for Dec 14th! I have a question on my vipers RPM's. It seems to be rover reving, Pin it and she climbs slightly over 10,000, Is this normal? By comparison my 99 SRX would run around 8600 RPM's. She had an old belt but other than that she ran, shifted up and down fine.
Thanks, Blue
Thanks, Blue
You might want to get a new 8DN belt, over 10000 is to high.

You aren't using any of the lead rivets in the Yamaha wts. , are you? I used them several years ago in my '97 SX and they came out. Boy did it over rev then. I am sure that's why they don't sell them anymore.

Thanks guys, I didn't think pushing 10,000 was right for a stock Viper. I have a new belt, will put it on and see how she does then! I noticed it was setting low in the secondary before my ride yesterday, plus been riding in alot of powder, thanks to the snow gods here in central Maine! Blue

someone may have left half a clutch kit in the sled, pull the clutches and start cleaning and inspecting. clutching on that should hit 8400, then climb to 8600

Thanks Scott, I need to look at a few things so I plan on checking things out. I bought the sled from a reliable Tuner in central Maine, He told me all preseason checks were done and all appears well so far. I have ridden around 100 miles so time for a check up anyway. Scott, Hows the ridding up your way? Thanks, Terry

Stock clutching on those would overrev bad on a good running viper, over 9,000 rpm easily. That combined with a bad belt and dirty clutches wouldn't put 10,000 rpm too far out of reach. Get in there and see what you have going on, verify part number of weights (8EK), rivets in the weights (you will need 4.5 grams in each hole) and spring color codes. Then clean the clutches good with hot soapy water and a green scotch brite pad. Blowdry with compressed air. Break in a new belt for 20 miles or so nice and easy, then crack it open from a standstill and see what you have for rpms. Let me know what you get.

Wait do you mean Bob from Recreation Plus here in Twin Lakes, WI? Or is there a twin lakes ME you are talking about?

Yamaholic, Yes Bob from Rec plus in twin Lakes, I bought 3 sleds and a trailer from him when I was stationed at great lakes Naval base back in late 90's and early 2000. 1995 Vmax 600, 1999 Vmax 500, 1999 SRX 700. The 95 Vmax was his race sled and would really rip for a 600! Anyway he was a fair dealer and always sat down and talked and helped with any repairs needed. He was not all about just money! Gave good advice and a nice small dealership!
Thanks, Terry
