I am trying to do my first track change on 2000 Venture 500 Fan. I have the speedo bearing out, the chain case cover off, the gears and chain removed.

I thought I read I could just undo the bolts I think there were three, that hold the chain case to the frame and it would give me enough room to slide the axle enough to remove the track without having to touch the brake. What am I missing? The chain case will move towards the front of the sled and up some maybe a half an inch and that is it. Any suggestions?

remove the brake caliper. The rotor is holding you. If it only has the 2 drive sprokets and not 4 you don't need to remove the chaincase. Maxdlx

might have to take a block of wood/plastic to the shaft. on my sx500r we did not need to remove the chain case as it only had 2 drivers. on bros viper it had 4 so off it came.

No, the bearings and c-clips stay in the chaincase. Just pull the chaincase straight off (once you have removed the caliper). Just go easy as there are oil seals on the other side of the chaincase.

Well, I removed the caliper and I can move the whole chain case up and down but I can not get it the axle to slide out. Do I need to take the parking brake off too? To rotor and the case will probably move up and down about an inch. The shaft is almost flush on the tunnel side but I can not get it to go anymore. I have tried pounding on it but it will not go.

I was trying to get this done tonight! :o|

Got it! Found in another post to hit the rotor and the whole assembly will come off without have to remove the parking brake.

One problem there is a metal piece about an inch long and a half inch thick that fell when I removed the case. Where does that go????

That is the key that goes in the keyway on the jackshaft and keeps the brake rotor from spinning on the shaft. Align the rotor on the jackshaft so that the keyways line up and slide it in.

That is the brake rotor "key". There is a slot cut into the upper shaft that the square key will go into before you put the brake rotor back on. If you look at the brake rotor itself, in the center, you will see the square cutout for the square key.

Thanks guys!

Almost there. The case is back on anything I need to do to check alignment when the gears are back on?
