well i got the engine put back together on one of my srx's....got the winderosa gasket kit.....put the paper base gasket in cuz thats what came in the kit....its a new top end honed cyls and new spi pistons and rings(ya i know this sleds only gonna get a couple hundred kms a year)....looks like the paper one is a little thicker then the oem yammy one....did a comp test and im only getting 100 psi and all 3.....can anybody measure a oem one and winderosa one to see what the diff is.....can i mill the heads to make up the difference to bring my comp back up....what im thinkin thicker gasket more pistons clearance less compression....i thought with a new mill i should be at least 120-130.....warm engine 5 pulls and open throttle...
Break in how long & how was it done...

The stock yamaha gasket is .010 thick
The winderosa is .030 before it is compressed, it will probably squish down a bit.

break in was 2 heat and cool cycles.....reving up and down not keeping the same rpms.....took sled out varying rpms from idle to 8000 rpms not letting it coast.....30 min or so ride....

the gasket being thicker will give the engine MORE deck clearance and drop the compression. You can check the squish clearance by inserting lead solder thru the spark plug hole above the wrist pin, meaning go from left to right not front to back or the piston will rock and give you a false reading. Anyways, while holding the solder bent in a "L" shape make sure you can feel the smooth side of the cylinder wall and then spin the clutch with your other hand and the piston will come up and "squish" the solder between the ehad and piston, remove the solder and use a pair of calipers and see how thick it is, report back and I will tell you how much to cut off the heads(flat cut) to get you back in bussiness.

well i tested the compression again last night and its running 120 120 and 120.....cold engine tho didnt have time to warm it up at work.....gonna do it tonight warm engine and see....check the squish also....does this mean my rings havent broken in fully yet and thats why i got the low reading....as for the gasket straight from winderosa its 22 thou compressed so its a 12 thou difference from stock....is this gonna make that much difference on compression???

yes, its a big differance as the motor already has .010-.012" deck clearance stock , now you just doubled that so the piston now sits down in the cylinder .012" more for a total of .024" at TDC, this lowers the compression alot.

well got the stock yammy base gasket in.....sled seems to run stronger now.....pulling about 135-140 psi comp on all 3....so im gaining like 20 psi give or take a bit.....good to go thanks guys for the help

with a thicker base gasket are you not advancing port timing on the exhaust thus you have to have good comprresion to run properly

ted, sure your advancing the port timing(some) but the amount of deck clearance you add lowers the compression far more then the exh. port rise does, adding deck clearance and youve gained alot more volume there because the entire piston now sits further down in the bore at TDC.
