W is a generally more reliable, lower compression, double piston ring engine. S is a fan cooled sport engine with single ring pistons, more RPM and compression. X is free air stock engine. R is racing. The widest range of lettering is in the "S" series. There are usually just minor porting and piston differences between these engines.
