2000 SXR 700. Me and my brother went riding today at Tug Hill and my beloved SXR let me down!!! He rides the SXR and started saying he felt and heard a clunking by his right foot. We stop and check it out and there is chunk of the chaincase broke to the extent that you could see the chain. The inner and outer are broke. The chaincase oil is also draining out onto the ground.

What would do this?

Haven't taken it apart yet but would just like some ideas. I would think it has to be a bearing. The chain is still attached and the sled will still move. Sled has 8700 miles. I replaced the drive bearings at 4000 miles as PM. They seemed fine. Should the chain and gears also be replaced? We can get a reasonably priced chaincase from someone on this site or Ebay.

Thanks for any replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your tensioner may have come off, or the chain is actually coming apart. Pull the cover, you should be able to see for sure.

You are lucky you can still drive it home. When years back I had a brand new 78 TNT,had it wide open and Kaboom!!!!!!Came to a stop, reved motor and nothing.Opened the hood and oil everywhere and millions of pieces of chaincasing and chain everywhere.Lucky me that warranty covered it.Had to wait like 3 hours for some guy on an old Skiroule to pull me up the river bank and 2 miles home, almost didn't make it.That sled sucked anyways and never bought another doo again.

If i was you i would get new chain new gears.. becaues the gears maybe chiped on some spots and also check to see if the bottom bolt is not snaped off.. my friend sled just did that like 3 days ago .. the bottom bolt snaped and that big washer went in between the chain and the gear and make the chain expand and it broke the chain case like in 5 spots!! lol

It would be like 5 differnt ways that the chain case might of broke..
