Newbie to the forum. Hello everyone! My buddy has a 2002 viper. We went riding last weekend and he pretty much blew it up. The dealer said he need a complete rebuild..crank, pistons, etc. My 2 questions are: what is an "honest" price to rebuild, and is it worth it. I'm mechanically inclined but lack the tools to rebuild one, and my buddy admits he's not and will not work on one. What do you guys think? Most of our riding is in the U.P. on the trails. Thanks in advance.

$1000.00 for a dealer to do it. But you can do it if you have the time. Was this the first ride of the season?
Did he prep it before he put it away last spring?

first ride and NO on the prep. Once the season was done, it sat in his trailer until this fall. We try to tell him to do a little p.m. on it, and now I think he realizes it.

until you open it up it could be just a piston and cylinder, but if you cooked a bearing then ya its the whole crank and then some.....
All for a bottle of fuel stabil and a can of engine storage = Max 20 bucks.

Did he burn a piston or did he loose a crank bearing?

I lost a crank bearing last year and I am just finishing a complete engine rebuild. My sled had 7,000 miles on so the pistons and rings were also done.

It cost me $225 to have the crank bearing between the #1 and #2 cylinder repaired by CB Performance. I think I will have spent less than $700 for the complete motor doing all of the rest of the work myself. That includes new Yamaha pistons, rings, and gaskets, and 1 used cylinder.

G.B.

$1000 labor??? whoa, thats high. Youll have that in parts easy if its major damage but not labor. Its gonna depend upon how bad it is for the cost, if the crank needs rebuilt, its gonna be spendy, the pistons are $100 each, rings $18 a set and the rest is nickle dime stuff. If the cylinders are ruined they can be redone at milenium for around $150-200ea ,it all depends if they need welded, or just stripped and replated. I would get some kind of idea as to the damage then access the damage, without seeing inside its anyones guess as to the extent of the damage, could be small or major! I could help you if you bring it down, pm me.

My thoughts exactly on the fog and sta-bil. I guess he went and picked it up and the dealer told him they found chunks of metal in the exhaust...? I'll probably go over this weekend and check it out. His brother has an F- something and does not have time to ride, so he's going to use it for this season. When it warms up, I'll get it over to my place and start tearing it apart. Thanks again for the help. I'm sure I be back in touch.

No crazy total with parts and labour.

Probabily a rusted crank bearing!+

I see so many engines go down early in the season and wonder why people don't put their sleds away properly. I'm approaching 7000 miles on my viper and still runs like brand new. I find the best way to store sleds is in a climate controlled room, ie dehumidfier in the garage, keeps everything from sweating and rusting.Inside a trailer seems to be the worst place. Stabil and fog or start up every month. I'm hoping to get 15000 miles before I do the top end on my viper. :-)

Cheers Steve

No kidding. My buddy had his skidoo in at the local dealer a few days ago, and they now charge $80 an hour for labor.

Thats the way to go. My sled has aprox. 5000 miles on it ( :bash: 00 Doo 500 zx). In the spring, I powerwash it, fill it full of gas (with stabill), fog it, grease it, .....Still pulls around 128 on the compression. My buddy laughs at me-not now though. We're thinking about buying 2 new sleds this spring. He wants another Yamaha and I'm kinda leaning that way. I'm going to post an idea on the 4 stroke page. THANKS for all the imput.
