Electrical for GPS (updated with pics)
I've got a '00 SXR 600 with no battery and I'd like to run my Explorist 500 off the eletrical system. I have the cigarette lighter adapter for the unit and I don't want to cut my 12V adapter to pieces. So I bought a female receptacle from Princess Auto. I'd like to place that under the hood somewhere and run the other end back up through the handle bars.
Could I simply tap into the same wires that the visor hooks into? Looks like a blue for the hot and black for the ground.
Thanks.

Well, I tested the voltage of the visor connector and noticed that it read zero. Will I only get a reading if it's reving high or something?

on your sled you have to use the brown wire at the key switch for dc power.
Well, I opened up the split loom, found the brown wire and attached the "tip" wire to it and left the ground attached at the handle bars when I was trying out the blue wire. No green light on my cigarette lighter adapter. Do I have to use a different ground now?
Sorry to be such a pain. Maybe someone could "youtube" the procedure

OK. I got a hold of a library copy PDF manual for the SX600 700D 2000 snowmobiles (lit-12628-02-11_491.pdf) and examined the wiring diagram. To my amazment, there are two "brown" cables. One called chocolate and the other just called plain brown. I connected mine to the chocolate wire which is associated with the throttle and carburetor switch. Whooops!
Once I connected to the to the light brown cable everything worked. Sorry for misinterpreting your advice mrviper. It was bang on. I opened up the split loom cable that comes out from just above the pull start on the engine side and tied in there.
Connecting the tip wire of the cigarette lighter adapter to the brown wire.
Then I tucked the female receptacle in the cavity just behind the air intake.
(Close up) I taped this up afterwards with electrical tape to keep
it neat and tidy.
Tapped into the black ground wire between the handle bars. The female
cigarette lighter that I bought at Princess Autohad a lengthy coil type
cable. You can see the wire taps for the heat shield too.
