97 700SX Belt deflection Problems

Bought a new Ultimax belt, and now the sled creeps ahead while it's running. I took all the washers off the adjustment bolts in the secondary, and it still moves. In fact, it almost stalls the motor when I grab the brake at idle.

Someone mentioned in another thread to check the "shoulder of the bolts" for wear, and to check the "plate under the bolts" and "flip it over" if it's worn--what do they mean by that?

I'm sure I have the right PN belt, and it's sitting slightly below the top of the secondary, so why is it so tight?
 
well, the best I could do was measure it with a tape, and there's just no way to be perfectly accurate with a tape measure in there. But it looks darn close as best as I could tell.

Also, it's a spare sled, and won't get tons of use, and the Dayco's were quite a bit cheaper than OEM. I figured a new Dayco would work just fine.
 
also, it doesn't creep with the old belt, which was even lower in the secondary. It's an ultimax too, but has some wear.

How do you adjust center to center? Loosen the motor mounts?
 
u should be using a clutch alignment tool to get center to center and alignment .....yes you need to loosen all the motor mounts to align the clutches which is a PITA. but its the only way to properly align center to center and offset.
 
Regarding the three bolts on the inside of the secondary clutch, they need to be checked for wear on the bottom. Also, these bolts bottom out on a plate which can sometimes wear....this plate can be spun around. if these parts are worn, you wont get the separation in the secondary clutch sheaves that you require for proper deflection. These should be checked especiallyif you dont have anymore washers under the three bolts and the belt is still too tight.

Should be using OEM belt.
 
The ends of my bolts are worn right down. Where can I get new bolts?

As far as the plate--do you mean inside the secondary where the ends of the bolts make contact to push the sheaves apart? How do I get the two sheaves apart to get at this plate?
 
yup that's where they wear...i would order oem bolts from yamaha dealer......

the plate is brass coloured on the sheave opposite side of the bolts...to separate the sheaves, need to remove the helix....if you 've never done this before, be careful because the helix is under pressure from the secondary spring. Make sure the helix goes back on with proper wrap also
 
ah... I get it now. I'm starting to see the problem... a combination of the bolts being worn and the plate being worn...I picked up some bolts at my local hardware store that are slightly longer than the worn originals. They work a little better, and will do until I get the new ones from my dealer.

I still would like to check my center to center without having to buy a $50 tool I'm only going to use once though.
