How to test an oil pump?

I don't know of any way to test the oil pumps besides putting some mixed gas in the sled, fill up your oil tank and go for a ride to see if the oil is going down. That's how I check them. On a Yamaha there is a cable that you set also for the amount of oil your pump puts out. There is a spec for that also . A dealer can give you that info or someone on here might have a manual.

There's a spec in the dealer manuals, not sure which one, that gives a specific amount of oil in cc's at idle and at wot. Years back, I was using too much oil in my V-max 4. So I got the specs and sure enough, the pump was bad. If memory serves me correctly, I had to pull the oil line to the fuel pump and started the motor with a 50:1 mix and caught the oil for a specific amount of seconds in a small cc vial that I think was used for a urine sample. Then I started it again and pulled the oil pump cable full open and caught that for a specific amount of seconds (it could have been 10 seconds) in another vial. I compared those readings with the manual for a specific plus or minus. The manual is specific about this. Ask your dealer if he can find it in one of his manuals. It could have been in the tech manual.

Pull your plugs out and dump some oil down your cylinders to lubricate pistons.

With an impact gun, socket and long extension, turn over your motor with the clutch for a short while with only the oil pump engine feed hose off draining into a small container. You can bleed the air in the feed lines and be able to see how much oil you are using at idle and full throttle by using something to hold the throttle to the bar. You can determine between the 2 throttle settings to see if the amount being delivered changes. Refer to your manual for oil pump cable adjustment specs.

1st thing i would do is put some pre-mix in the gas tank(don't get carried
away 50-60:1 is plenty)

2nd set idle 16-1,700 RPM's

3rd set throttle end play to 2mm.

4th set oil pump free play here and here to 19-20mm('97 sx 700)

by the time you run that one tank of pre mix out you'll know if the pump
is working/set right and it's primed and all the air is out.
