Hi everyone, I have a 1979 Exciter 440 and am wondering what potential if any this motor has for modding. I am not familiar at all with the 485 motor in the Phazer but have been told that the upper end of that motor will work on the 440. Not sure if they are even close or if the person that told me had any idea what they were talking about but I have kept this Exciter for sentimental reasons but would like to warm it up a bit.

Thanks, Jon

THE EXCITER 440 WERE ONE OF THE ALL TIME BEST SLED YAMAHA EVER MADE. VERY FAST, GREAT RIDE, VERY REAILABLE AND COOL THING THEY SHARED SAME COLORS AS SRX IN THOSE YEARS. AS FARR AS PERFORMANCE, THERE WERE WAY MORE PERFOMANCES UPGRADES TO THE 485 PHAZER THEN THE EXCITER. AS FARR AS ENGINES, I DON,T THINK THEY WILL SWAP OUT WITHOUT CHECKING PART NUMBERS. THE 440 EXCITERS WAS ACTUALLY 433 cc. PHAZER WAS A TRUE 485 cc. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Friend of mine had a mid 90's blue 500 XT. He made alot of fun of my old sled one day until I smoked his A$$ one day on the trail. For a 440 fan those things will fly!!!!!

Talk to Opsled, if I recall correctly, it was he that told me that you can flycut the top half of the case and fit on some 485 jugs, then I guess it takes some grinding of the fins to fit the cooling tins, add an Aaen pipe and voila! Yur looking at close to 80 HP! Yippee! 600's for dinner! G.

Transplanting an entire Phazer engine into an Exciter chassi would be difficult as the engine mounting systems are completely different. The Phazer also has a taller cooling shroud because of the fan assembly and you will likely run into hood clearance problems on the fan side. It might fit but it would be tight. Putting a Phazer top end on an Exciter case is not terribly difficult but will require some machine work. Once done and done right it will look very close to stock and any mods you can do to a Phazer (including twin pipes) can be added to it for more power. The one thing to remember is that the Exciter cooling system doesn't have as much capacity as the Phazer system so you can run into overheating problems in certian conditions. Phazer engines can be built to a very reliable 70hp and the same can be done with a Phazer top on an Exciter bottom. More can be had but reliability goes down with mods and the more you do the less trailable your sled becomes.

Thanks

I love information. I'm going to do some testing to see if I can get a phazer cooling fan setup to work on the exciter. I also have been kicking the electric fan idea around. When I get all the stuff I need I'll break the tape measure out and get the gears turning. Meanwhile, keep the info coming if you will.

Oh and I have some friends that are VERY good at body and fiber glass work so if I had to massage the hood a bit to get a phazer engine in there I'd do it. As for the motor mounts I could deal with that. I'd like to have a couple of pics of the exciter motor next to a phazer motor and the dimensions if I could get them.

Thanks, Jon

I guess what i'm saying is if the bottom end of a phazer is really based off of a 433 it should be similar so a motor mount set up should be the least of my worries. Just get the clutches lined up. Right? Worry about hood clearance later?

The Phazer 485 engine was based off the Exciter 433 but completely redesigned. There are similarities but direct interchangability of any of their parts isn't the case. As far as mounts the Phaser uses front and rear mounts while the Exciter used bottom mounts. They were also positioned differently in completely different chassis so some custom and/or modified stock mounts would be needed.
