Hey, I have a question about this. My 12 year old son and I are working on a '96 Phazer II. The chain is broken and there are teeth missing from the top gear. Happened on his first ride after picking it up yesterday. Guess you can't expect trouble free for 500.00. I heard from another member that the older PZ's had the wider chain and gears and may not be interchangable. Is this true? Also, this sled has 18 teeth on the top gear and I'm hearing that 17 is more common? Any help is appreciated. Been into sledding quite awhile but have never had to change gears or ratios. Thanks!

somebody will tell you here but like I said the chain and gears are like 3 teeth wide I don't know hnow to explain it and I don't know if that year where the same or not....Mine came off a 1990 phazer II...Make sure all is running right and spinning good on tha chaincase so it doesn't happend again.....maybe the chain was bad from the go...?

I kinda knew there was trouble there when we looked at it. I showed the seller the extra play when I moved the secondary back and fourth and he replied that it looked like it needed adjustment. I'm wondering if the two teeth were already broken off the gear. One way or the other it was way too loose amd I shoulda adjusted it as soon as I got it home but my son was anxious to run it up the road. Probably a lack of maintenance issue. At least it's an easy fix. Be nice to throw a good used chain and gears on it as it is just a cheapy. He is growing out of his Bravo.

some play on the secondary is normal on yamaha...my phazer and redhead both does it....and there is also play on the lower gear on the chaincase....So those are ok.....Nick
Maybe that chain was bad.....
Do some search and see what you can come up with...Nick

The old Phazers used a roller chain anything newer than I think 89 or so all came with silent chains. I may have some gears and chains for that Phazer. Send me a PM if you need me to look as well as a reminder to me......................SRXtreme

OK, I just checked Yamaha part numbers. Seems that 1991 and newer are interchangable. Only difference is what was standard for certain years. '91 and others around that year were 17 tooth top gear and my '96 came standard with 18 tooth. 1990 and older have completely different part numbers.
Can anyone help with 1991 or newer gears and chain? Preferrably 17 tooth. Also, do I need to change the lower gear? Standard was 29 tooth but available in 33 or 35 and there are 64, 66, and 68 link chains... Kinda new at this. I wish the PZ II had the oompf that my wife's '99 PZ500 has. Thanks!
