Well, after a couple years of the old SRX beating all my buddies sleds, it finally gave out. I noticed it was running a little strange (not getting around 8400 rpms when WOT down a lake). Then I stopped a talked with a buddy for a while, started it and took off. Engine bogged pretty hard then I heard knocking. Not good. Got it home and started the teardown. Pics of the piston and cylinder are attached. The clutch side one is the one that burnt. Piston is burned away bad at the exhaust side. This is from running too lean I think. I noticed when I took the carb boots off, the one on that clyinder seemed like it was a little loose. Also the exhaust donut on that pipe was leaking a little before this happened. Also, maybe the crank seal on that side was leaking? Jetting on carbs is all stock and they looked pretty clean. Other two pistons and cylinders look great. Piston tops have a nice golden brown ring and you can still see the cross hatch on the other two cylinders. Any ideas let me know.

That same cylinder had been flouling pugs alomost every time I ran the sled a few years back when I bought it. I fixed it be turing the mixture screw on the carb just a little form the stock settings. I don't think this would have caused it because this was 2 years and 3000 miles ago.

Do I need a whole new jug for that one or can it be sleeved. I think they are nikisal coating on the jugs so I'll probably need a new one right? NEw set of pistons and rings all around, a new jug plus gaskets and I think I'll be good to go. Bearings on the rod look alright and crank seems fine. Any advice before I start buying parts would be appreciated. I need to get back out there soon as my buddy who rides a F7 thinks hes fast now that the blue streak is out of commision.

All that aluminum is in the case. Your not sure crank seal condition. And sounds like didn't pressure test for leaks before tear down. So sounds like good time to split case and do crank seals and get that aluminum out of there and check crank bearings. Seals are $27 for both and $8 for yamabond so not big money but will have some time in it. Not sure your mechanical level but by reading your post don't think you would have any problem. A good manual and take your time so can get back together correctly to smoke that cat.
Burnt up center hole in mine couple weeks ago. Bought a new cyl for $246. Was about the same as replating if I added shipping cost to repair cylinder and had new one in 3 days.
If other pistons look ok would rering for $15 a hole. New OEM piston was $88, they seem to be the best out there.
Would look at carb boots good. Clean and inspect carbs and fix that exhaust lk.
Good luck and if have any questions ask, somebody will have the correct answer.

I always run 93 octane fuel in it and the plugs on the other two cylinders were nice and brown. The plug from tha bad cyclinder didnt seem burnt but the gap was knocked shut from pieces of the ring in the clylinder. I plan on pulling the case apart to clean it out, just needed to find a clutch puler from a buddy yesterday. The crank seals will get replaced and Ill chceck out the bearings the best I can. Anybody got a good lead on a new jug? Its a 98, so I think only 98-99 jugs will work.
Should I replace all three pistons, or just get one new oem and re-ring them all?

All new rings, Mic out other two and see for outa wear spec.

if she's got alot of miles i'd just do 3 new pistons.

use OEM only...
