Okay guy's, here is the deal, I just got a 1997 500xt, My son's and I are going to make it a radar run sled, The only sled's we have set up and raced are for drag racing, we did very well with them, if anyone out there has any tip's or idea's that I can use, I would like to here them, the only thing I know about this sled is that it run's at 7800 rpm's, If anyone has ever ran this sled, I would like to know what kind of speed's to expect from it, Thank's, R.J.

I ran a 2000 Vmax500 and over a season tuned it in very well. Once upon a time, my entire set up was in the TY Tech pages. Here's the skinny:

Clutching:
8AB weights, my motor did best with 2.4 gram rivets in both holes.
47/41 Dalton Helix
Dropped 1 tooth on the top sprocket initially, later on I dropped 2 because I wanted to boondock with it.

I also put on a tempaflow, but you could drop to 150 mains and still be pretty safe. Check the plugs, no lighter than cardboard brown.
I also put some carbon fiber reeds in there, snapped it up a bit.

Without studs, my sled would hit 103 on the speedo. The radar runs I did with it were all around 500 feet (I think) and I would consistently be around 70mph, which was in the hunt for the 600's of the day. Beyond that, it is a great set up for trail bombing and boondocking, racing yer buddies.

Biggest thing for your XT would be traction! The stock tracks suck so hard, it aint funny. Camoplast 9830 with 96 1" studs, or a Ripsaw no studs. I still had 103mph after gearing down 2 teeth on top, and running the ripsaw with no studs. And, it was quick!

Good luck!
