Hi folks,
I recently bought a new VK540 to use as a workhorse. The machine runs well enough, but it seems to smoke a lot, especially until it gets warmed up. It starts perfectly when cold, but will not idle on its own after about 2 minutes. I need to jack it up and turn the track slowly for a couple minutes and eventually it warms up and idles on its own.
Now I realize that all sleds should be warmed up properly, however i don't think it is normal for a brand new sled to refuse to idle when cold, and to have clouds (and i do mean CLOUDS) of smoke rolling out of it when you hit the throttle.
It doesn't seem to matter about the temperature..... using it anywhere from -5C to -30C and results are the same.
It was fouling up the BR9ES plugs a lot, so i went to a hotter BR8ES plug, and that has stopped the fouling. However, there still seems to be a lot of smoke. The BR9EYA plugs also work about the same, but do little to help the smoke issue.
The dealer said it might need jetting, but they didn't recommend that until it had some more miles on it (500km or so). Another dealer said that the VK540's just smoke a lot.
I am using nice fresh gas, as well as Yamaha oil.
Anybody have experience with the VK540?

my et410 and my uncles vk540 both smoke when cold and i know he has over 10,00km on his vk, it goes away when the sleds are warmed up. my et has 4500km. if you are still on the 1st tank of gas, the dealer mixes the 1st tank on all new 2 stroke motors so untill you fill it up again it will tend to fowl plugs. as for the idle, turn it up to warm up the sled. just turn it down after it is warm. i have been trying to fix that on my et and have had no luck. just seem to be the nature of the beast.

Thanks for the reply!!
Glad to hear of a vk getting 10,000K+.... hope mine holds up that well, lol.
When you mention turning the idle up and down... is there an easy way to do that on the VK540?

there is a phillips screw by the throttle cable that you turn in to increase idle.
uncle has 2 of them. his 88 needs a chaincase but shows 7000km on the clock. his 92 shows 12000km but the spedo has not worked for the last 5 years and he still uses this sled every weekend on his trapline.
