I'm thinking of buying an newer sled. I'm wondering what is the differences between a viper and a 600 twin vmax/sxr? I know motor etc. but as from owners how is the viper different from a basic sx style yamaha?

I dont believe there is really too much difference betwen a 2002 SXR 700 and a 2002 Viper.
Real close to same power but viper has Pv's
98 was the last year for 600 twins so you would be getting an older sled if you wanted a twin

In 99 they chaged the name from xtc to vamx. They where still black red and yellow but they had the twin yet.
The yamaha 600 twin's aren't nearly as reliable as the tripples they got bad gas milage too,
The tripple are way smoother engine, good on gas,and very reliable.

That's the thing.. I have a 2001 vmax now. Stock 500 twin converted with all the oem stuff to stock 600 twin. Sucks on gas and not smooth at all. Plus the power is ok but not great. So I want to upgrade but I cant afford a new sled, only used. Everyone I know has skidoos so I dont know anyone with a viper I can borrow, lol! Never ridden one. I like my current sled alot but thinking of upgrading. I need smoother, better sounding and better mileage engine. Do you guys think its a big enough difference to be worth the change??

I like my twins,reliable,never let me down,not to bad on gas/oil,glad i
own them, but......would i buy another, probably not, triples are smoother
and better yet on fuel and reliable also.
my XTC is my "daily driver" and i love it runs rides looks great, but some year when i up grade that it'll be looking for a 6 or 7 trip. for sure.
by all means MAX get a tripple, you'll be glad you did...

Viper vs Vmax
What it all comes down to is what you are going to do with it. Lake racing, drag racing against your buddies : SRX for sure. Trail riding, crusing : SXr - Vmax.
The Vipers have problems smok'n the center cylinder. Not very dependable IMO until 04 with the DCS. The Red Head non-powervalve motor is Very reliable and smooth. Also good on gas/oil.
The SRX in stock form is very reliable also.
As far as difference between the SXr / Vmax and the Viper the Viper has taller spindles on the trailing arms but everything else is the same. Oh the look is cool to.
I was not impressed with the Viper vs the std Vmax as far as Technology updates. They used the same parts and called it a different name and the Viper motor was no faster than the Redhead IMO. Typical with the amount of parts involved and the retooling cost to change.
Buy what you can afford is my advise. It all depends on how much you ride and how you ride.

I ride primarily trails. I ride like its turboed dirt bike and basically enjoy throughing it around, jumping it over everything I can(I love it when plows plow in the trail sides, lol!), and I like to push myself and the sled hard to both our limits with every turn. I like power right there the second I want it and not to fast when I dont. Then there are the days I bring the lady.. touring is boring, lol!!!! I dont know what sled is best for me.. My buddies say skidoo 500ss but I can bring myself to do it.... any thoughts..

If I were you, I'd look into getting anything with the redhead 600/700 triple, or an SRX. Granted, I don't know how much you "jump", so as far as suspension goes, only you know what you would need. Properly maintained and tuned, those engines will give you years of trouble-free service. Also, those redhead motors have lots of inexpensive mods you can do for more pep without sacrificing reliability.
Just my opinion.
Hope this helps.

so maybe I should just find a redhead for my sled, or, if I can part with it, I will give my baby to the ladyfreind and buy myself an sxr redhead.
What if I find a decent viper? what should I look for motor and package wise?
