Having a problem with a 1980 ET 300. First the basics, new pistons/rings- good compression for both cylinders, carb clean, float level checked, clutches cleaned, fresh gas. Sled starts easy with fuel enrichener but then if left sitting(idling) it seems to foul the plugs? Change plugs, starts right up but sometimes fouls plugs again. Idle mixture screw doesnt seem to affect response in motor. I suspect problems with the ignition as it heats up, tried different coils but no difference. Is there a test you can do to verify the pickup coil is breaking down as it heats up? causing a weak spark-fouling the plugs? Being close to 30 years old could rust be a problem inside the flywheel-pickup coil? Any ideas!!!!

The fuel enrichener needs to be put on half very quickly after starting. It dumps a bunch of fuel and if it is adjusted wrong it is worse. There could be something (crap) behind the flywheel or timing could have slipped. Failures on those ignitions are extremely rare in the first 15-20 years of life but not out of the question.

Have put on new spark plug caps ? And is it the same cylinder that fouls each time ?

Yes I have changed plug caps/ coils etc. with no permanent cure, seems to be an intermittent problem. If the plugs foul seems that the pto side is worse- change plugs and off you go, pulls good! Just curious if there is a positive test you can do to verify a faulty (breaking down) pickup coil, perhaps when the problem happens take a new set of plugs put a huge gap on them (say .060) and see if there is a good spark?!? Beyond that, I guess I'm back to the carb for further inspection. Thanks for the response!!!
