Attn: Vintage Vmax guys,
I picked up an 85 to restore and the sled has what I believe is some sort of snow deflector under the hood that partially covers the front of the pipes, I thought someone fabricated it because I not seen one before. Then while surfing threw the Vintage pages here I found another members sled that had the same deflector.
Was this exclusive to the 85's? or some sort of aftermarket piece??
I attached the link

I have owned over 10 Vmax 540's all which were used and None had the deflector. I have argued with guys as to if the came stock and I believe they must have been an accessory? Maybe for use in deep snow conditions to keep snow from cracking the pipes or getting to the clutches ? The Phazer and Exciter from stock had a closeable flap for this purpose.
Thanks for the info guys, As I said at 1st I thought it was fabricated but if you look real close at the mounting flanges it is a professional job with actual mounted (welded) nuts on the lower arms that mount to the bellypan.
Anybody else have any info on this shield??

That piece is definately Yamaha. I have had several sleds that had it but they were all later models. That piece doesn't show up in the parts book untill 85 and it is called a "cover" in the book and in 87 the book it is called a "cover ALT. part". I'm not sure if they all had it from 85 on up and most were removed or if it was an option. It must there either to keep snow off the pipe or to protect the hood from heat. Maybe both?

Thanks guys,
I think once I get deeper into the restore I will remove it, it looks a little ugly and takes away from that muscle look .

I thought I read somewhere that sleds made for sale in Canada came with those shields.

Hey jipcee, where can aguy get a look at some more and better pics of that max? Looks intense. After owning and riding an 83 from new for ten years, and always wanting to mod it and use the factory graphics with another color, in my case blue, I gotta see more man! G.
