Ok please bear with me while I give you the symptoms. I have a 1998 SRX that I just purchased. The owner said he had the carbs cleaned not too long ago and they should be ok... Who knows. My father picked it up for me and they had snow so they rode it and it ran ok but idled about 500rpm and would occasionally die when trying to idle. They rode it around a field for a short time then it has sat since. 3 weeks later .... tonight I got to my parents house and was itching to take it for a spin. It started on the 3rd pull full choke then after starting i flipped the choke to half choke for a couple minutes and then took the choke off. I managed to get it out of the trailer but it didnt want to move very much. clutch engaged about 4k then took alot of throttle to get it to move. I rode in a field and at about 1/4 throttle it would act like it wanted to go but about 5500rpm it would lay down almost like it was bogging out and it would only hit about 35mph. I havent ridden in 13 years and am now just getting back into it. Thank goodness I bought two 98's I pulled the 2nd one out and took it across the field and ohhhhhhhh myyyyyyyy gooooodnnnesss!!!!!!!! I am still feeling the wind blowing. That thing rips. scary fast I loved it but as it seemed i was outrunning my headlight LOL I decided to come inside and post this. I was hoping to ride in Northern Indiana this weekend with my dad but now I have to figure out whats wrong with srx #1. Sucks to drive from Alabama just to have this happen but better now than when I have my michigan trip. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will probably be taking it to the shop but thought I would ask first.
thanks
Brad

I'm sure with the help of some people on here you'll get it figured out and won't even need to take it in. If it was me I'd clean the carbs even though he said it was already done. There's a thread about it on here with pictures showing you what to do (it's not very hard). Then I would clean the clutches. You might need to clean the power valves too but I'm not sure, mine doesn't have them (I wish it did) but I read all the time people having to clean them so I'm sure it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I live in Gulf Shores but I've been working in Columbia South Carolina for the past year. Either place it's a long trek to the snow LOL. I finish my job in Columbia as of Feb 22 so I will probably just go up to my parents and watch for snow for a few weeks. Just my short ride tonight has me itching for some real snow!

i was up on the mountain and it sound like what my sled was doing but i could only get about 6000 out of it and it was a deep bogging sound..... come to findout it was just my plug boots have you checked that yet??... mine ran good for a while first to.... it was tring to run on 1-2 cylinders at a time....try to give the plug wires a tug at the boots and if they come right off with no bare wire (a screw in peice in the wire) thats for sure whats the problem....if that seemes to be good ... then do a compression check.... make sure that all 3 are the same.... thats about where i would start ... keep us posted... with the feed back this site will get you fixxed right up.....

Did ya try changing the plugs, you saaid you left the choke on for a couple of minutes,if i leave mine on for that long im sure my plugs would be fouled,is it running on all three cylinders, one fouled plug and she will run like sh*t. let us know.

what they said
on srx
you choke ONLY to start, them blip the choke for a split second to 1/2 only to keep it running while you put your helmet on.
notorious for fouling plugs with the slightest excess of choke

Vote for fouled plug _O/
If it has 10ECS plugs, start using 9ECS's
If it has 10ECS plugs, start using 9ECS's
for the idle problem if you didnt already fix it im almost positive its your pilot jets(1 of them),fouled plug, with allot of yamahas as every body already said but just start with full choke and let it idle down and then flip the choke to half for a second and do so about 2-4 times,my 2 cents ![Winterrules :winterrul :winterrul](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/winterrules.gif)

Ok checked the plug wires and they looked good. I also went out and bought 3 BR9EIX plugs so I will put those in next and see if she wakes up. Thanks for all your help Ill let you know in a few how she does.

Dumb reply of the day: is it even possible there is old skunky gas in the tank? Also, did you say they were idling at 500? I think these babies want to sit at 1800. Could that have been good for anything, including carbon buildup in nasty places? I know I have more questions than answers, but what does idling that low do to the reed valves?

a fouled plug will make it idle erractic before you start cranking on the idle screw find out what has done this of if anything maybe the idle was set low. check plug caps for resistance 5k ohms anything more ditch em. had a xc sp riding with me and the sled ran fine at speed but had a bog off idle checked the caps and one was out of spec replaced and it ran great no bog. also where is max rpm's when you run maybe the carb cable is too tight and tors is kicking in.

Ok just got done pulling plugs and the clutch side plug was wet, center plug was dry and exhaust side was wet. then we put the clutch side plug in the cap and grounded it no spark, center had spark and exhaust didnt spark. I then moved center plug to clutch side boot and she sparked as did exhaust side so I know i had two bad plugs. I went out and bought some iridium plugs and im gonna put those in and try to run around the yard. im suppose to be leaving in 2 hrs for wellston michigan! keep your fingers crossed.
Thanks,

Thanks to everyone on the advice. I just got back from wellston MI and It ran great. The idle problem even went away. Once again thanks alot it would have cost me alot more to take it to the shop!!!!
Hey radman do some research on what plugs to use, I read you bought BR9EIX and iridium plugs. I think the stock plugs are BR9ECS, i know the 1999's and up are
