I know everybody is going to tell me to use the search function, but I have already done that and I am still not sure of what I should do. I am looking to clutch my 2002 Viper. The only modification to it is a Bender can. I have no experience with clutching so I don't know what I need, where to get it, and how difficult it is to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

what are you looking for would help too. you want better trailability or a race set up. Maxdlx

Snakebit, thanks for the reply but that didn't help out too much. What I am looking for is what to buy, where to buy and how to do it.
Maxdlx, I my sled isn't a race sled, I just use it for regular riding. It's mainly trail riding, with some lakes and ponds to really open it up on. What I am looking for is something to give it a little better performance and maybe help me keep up with the bigger sleds especially out on the ponds. I hope you can understand what I'm looking for. Thanks!

well, i really like my brothers set-up on his viper. works awsome in the trails and is not too bad on the lake either. his user name on here is kirkswim. now i know that you can get all of the parts in his set-up from your dealer if they sell aftermarket perfomance parts. if not just give ritchieritch (site sponsor) a call or ulmer racing (also site sponsor). they can get you what you should need to get your sled running better.

if you have the stock can i would put it back on to clutch as the aftermarket ones do not hold rpms on back to back testing unless wrapped with header wrap.

Maim, thanks for the response. I'll search your brother's name and see if I can find out what he did. What kind of changes did his kit make?

New 2002 & 03 Viper Trail

53/43 Helix, Green Secondary Spring & Everything else stock

try SRXSPEC Ulmer Racing, Rich Motorsports, CB Performance or other TY advertizers

I like Hauck's Viper kit. Helix, two springs and go. Pulls very hard off the line and corner to corner and backshift are sweet. Still haven't run it up to top end yet, but for a trail setup I love it.

I have Turks set up with the 53/43 dalton helix, 60 wrap green spring and everything else stock. It gives the sled a snapy feel, great corner to corner, good on the gas and very easy.

Depends what you want to spend. Personally I wouldn't waste my money on a kit that gives you little flexability. For about $250, put a set of Thunder Products Heavy Hitters in it. They work so good and are very tuneable. You get a new primary spring, threaded weights and bolts/washers w/ Loktite. Once you have it set, that's it. No more messing around. You run the stock secondary helix w/ a silver secondary yamaha spring. I am running over 60+ grams of total weight in mine and have 4500 miles on the setup with zero problems.

I saw on here someplace that one person clutched his stock viper and was able to beat 800cc sleds. Can I expect this out of the 53/43 helix and green primary spring?

That would be me. I tried the 53/43 helix early on when my Viper was new with no success. Then I tried a couple different clutch kits with unsatisfactory results. That's when I talked with Jeff Simons for awhile and he suggested the HH's.(note: I was having an over rev issue) All I can say is that I am VERY happy with them.

Here are some sleds I have beaten on the lake over the years:
*some various 98 SRX700's and SRX600's
*some RX-1's, not all (buddy has a cammed and clutched one, but I am close)
*ZR800 carbed
*MXZ800 (3 different ones)
*one ZR900 (only from rolling start, but stayed ahead of him for over 3 miles)
*Even with a ZR800 efi on a 38F deg. day who had a 1.25" Ripsaw
* a boat load of XC 700 and 800's (never lost to any)
* a modded ZRT600(porting, heads, D&D triples)
*even with a 2006 REV800 Gade Power Tek
* a 2001 XCR800 triple/triple with a 1.375" track
*stayed from even to 1 length back of a Mach Z1000 (same day as ZR900 on the same rolling start for 3+ miles)....the ZR was on my snow flap

I may have forgotten some, but that's a few. I guess you can see why I like the HH's. I just drive it and am not tinkering much at all.

Journeyman, looks like your kit definitely shows some good results. My problem is that $250 is a little more than I can spend at the moment. Are there any other comparable kits for less money? If I got the 53/43 and the green secondary, could they still be used in the future if I upgraded to the kit you have now, or does the kit come with different stuff? Thanks.

The 53/43, green & 70 wrap is a sweet set up for the money...makes the viper a quick trail sled...there is a trade off, loss of top speed...but I'm only there a short time, but trail ride aggressively all day long...something I can live with...cheers

I think to change helix and sec. spring will give you very good value for a little money. I helped a friend with his viper, and we didn´t buy anything because he had some yamaha parts from earlier sleds. With the great advises on this site we tried a teflon coated 52/45 helix(don´t now what make) and a green spring, and we was surprised with the difference. Outshifted and pulled much harder without a difference in backshift. If you want performance for little money buy a used 51/43 helix from a rx-1, a green spring and 4.5gram rivets to tune the rpms (it probably overrevs) and you will have a great time from a little input.

Well, since the 53/43 helix and green secondary spring setup is fairly cheap, I think I am going to go with that. Are there any brands that I should look for for either of those parts? Also, how hard is it to do this to the sled? Thanks.

I have another question...I found a 51/43 helix for sale. Would this work and what would the difference be between that and the 53/43? Thanks
