I'm used to mixing the oil manually, when the dinosaurs roamed the plains. Do I need to be concerned that the oil delivery somehow stops in my 98 SRX 700, and by the time I realize it the engine is cooked? Is this a common problem? Is it paranoid to check the reservoir every half hour and keep topping it up? Or is some faith required here? Thanks. Steve.

should be no worries, yamaha pumps are very reliable,of course always
keep an eye on usage as not to be over pumping.
there's a setting on the oil pump you can check to see if your with in spec.

If you say the pump is very reliable, I'll go with that. In fact, you seem more concerned about overpumping, which to me means perhaps less performance but more reliability due to increased lubrication, which is what I'm looking for right now. Make no mistake, that will probably change as soon as I'm comfy with the sled. I had even considered spiking the fuel with some oil, but thought I"d better get advice first. Thanks again Steve.

The thing is Steve yamaha was very generous on the oil pump settings,
between that and not knowing what the previous owner done it is why i
say check settings, could be to lean or to rich.
no need to add oil to the gas tank, pump will supply all you'll need and could
lead to poor performance, plug fouling and maybe a lean condion

Understood. I've only taken her out twice and, holy Jeez, I'm not scared of much but I had to let off after five or six seconds wide open. And that's with one non-working power valve (waiting for a cable). Having said that, the oil does drip out from the exhaust joints, and the power valves were slick as seals when I pulled them out to check for carbon. You're right, if anything, there's more rather than less oil getting to the cylinders. Thanks again. I'll take the knowledge and advice on TY over a library of manuals any day, although they are useful too. Steve

LOL...yes a SRX is an amazing machine.(mine has found it's last home for
sure)
if you got oil leaking from the exhaust joints you may need new donuts or
springs.
yes having a manual is a must for anyone doing there own wrenching.

while why are on the subject, i just checked my oil pump settings (01 srx) ans it was at 19.75mm, i'm using 100%synthetic oil(motul) i just readjusted to 22.75 as i read a post from mrviper saying that you could adjust up to 23mm with a good 100%synthetic oil. My pv's where really dirty after only 600miles so thats why i checked the oil pump specs. Is there a big difference between 19.7 to 22.7? Also i read somewhere that the oil pump tends to pump more with high millage? my motor has been completely redone 800miles ago but i didnt change the pump, and the sled has around 20 000miles, i just finished copletely redoing it lol, previous owner never even changed the rings lol. Does it mater if i didnt change the pump?

Stock setting is 20-22mm, yes you can run a little leaner with a good
syn. oil, i have my srx at 23 iirc using Amsoil Interceptor.
yes you should be able to notice a little difference in consumption
yes i would have installed a new pump being your has that many miles
on it but you should be alright haven't heard of any pump failures do to high mileage.
but may want to consider it down the road for pice of mind.

you should get about 3 tanks of gas to 1 tank of oil.....get approx 500-600kms out of a oil tank....i usually check it after a couple long rides...

The oil reservoir is two and a half litres. so at fifty to one a reservoir of oil should do 125 litres of gasoline. The tank takes forty five litres, so two tanks is 90and three is 135. So filling the reservoir every second fillup ought to do it. Also, I'm sure none of us let our gas run dry... I can make it..I can make it... lol...

I was looking for this exact info. Thanks for posting guys. Man I love this forum.
I'm guessing this all goes the same for the '00 SRX700? The original poster was for a 98 but I don't think the oil setting/consumption was something else they changed for the '00 and up.
How many miles/km's can we run when the low oil warning light comes on? Not that I plan on running low. It's just if I change the brand of oil I'm using I want to mix the least possible without pumping out the current one. This way I will be able to see if there is a smoke difference between Amsoil Interceptor and Blue Marble.

Your '00 is 20-22mm, i've ran 20-30 miles before with the light on, little
nerve racking but i just stopped every so often and looked in/at my bottle
as not to run out of course, but do at your own risk i will add.
Yamaha's low oil light's are pretty conservative.
