I'm working on a 98 SRX. It ran fine last year, he pulled it out of the shed this year and now two cylinders are not firing. The PTO cylinder fires, Center and Magneto stay ice cold. Any ideas before I run the gauntlet of ignition troubleshooting?

just happened to me. I fouled two plugs and it wouldnt hardly move. I got great advice from the forum and come to find out two bad plugs. I replaced all three and she ran like a scalded dog yesterday. I figured out the bad plugs by using the plug from the cylinder that was firing in the other two plug boots and grounded to top of cylinder head my dad pulled and i couldnt see any spark. put in plug from working cylinder and grounded to head and it sparked! Easy fix for me hopefully it will be for you as well.
good luck.

check for spark at the two dead cyl's if you have spark try puting some gas in each dead cyl and see if they fire ,if they do the carbs probally need a good cleaning.

it'd be a good idea anyways to pull the carbs off and give them a good cleaning, makes for a lot less headaches and $ down the road if something is inside them. I do mine every year before I even fire the sled up

Carbs Spotless, Pluggs Changed

I tore pluggs apart this afternoon, they were spotless. The owner had changed pluggs, he said that it ran great for a short spell then fell on it's face. I checked for spark, even on good cylinder I couldn't pull a spark. I'm thinking that I didn't have a good ground. I read a post from last month about crankcase being filled with gas.

did you put a new plug on the dead cylinder? if not put a good plug on the cylinder and ground it and look for spark. Your situation sounds alot like what I just went through. 6000 rpms at 30mph was all I got when trying to run it before I figured out what my problem was (2 bad plugs). I replaced the spark plugs and its good as new now.

I had the same problem last month on my 98. I ended up pulling the coils off and wire brushing the mounts on the coils where the bolts go through and the spacers. I put it back together and had spark again.

That Could be possable

I rembember when he bought this sled new 6000+ miles ago. Looks like I'll be pulling the carbs back off and checking coil mounts. I'll probably pull the exhaust and blow out the crankcase. Are there any other known Ignition problems with the older SRX's? Thanks for the help so far.

Got her running tonight

while I was checking coils I had a boot-end fall off. So I pulled all of them off. I scrached and cleaned them and could get none to test out as good as the book said and the one that fell off tested out the worse. I clipped the wires to make a good fresh connection and re-installed. I tested the coils and they tested good. I pulled out the reeds and blew out a bunch of gas from the crankcase. Reassembled everything with new plugs and the thing fired right up.

I seems to have a little miss at idle. It could be the boot ends. Has anyone ever had plug boot ends go bad?

Only ran it on warm-up stand. I'll post how it runs after a test run.

thanks for the help.
