Ok, so I have a 1986 yamaha phazer I am currently rebuilding the engine for. Everything is stock on this sled and I was wondering what fun/cool mods there are to do to increase performance, ride, etc.
I have read something about putting vmax 500 carbs on. What year sled should they come from and what else do I need (cables?)
Is there a different skid I can tuck underneath to run a longer/more aggressive track?
I know its an old sled, and some of you might say i should just get a newer one or whatever, but I think just doing the work and having something a little unique in the end is worth it.
thanks,
matt

Run "SX" pistons, clutch and pipe it. Run carbon tech reeds on a set of vmax 600 reed cages, It will rip.
Start out by searching "Phazer" on here and read every post, thats what I just did a couple weeks ago. Some of the info is not too detailed but you can get a good starting point.

What do you mean by "SX" pistons.

This is what I did in mine. PSI pipe, a set of flatslides from a 95 vamx i guess it was with the cables, Boyesen reeds, Red/pink primary spring, plastic skis it rocks but I still have to do some tunning....
I have an extras set of reeds if you want to start with that would be an easy mod....

Sx Pistons
SX pistons were pistons with the intake skirt cut . I think bender came up with this , then yamaha started making them . they don't make them anymore but you can make your own . Very easy . I cut mine with a wood router. I have cardboard template i made from old pistons . If you need a template i will mail you one . Makes more power for sure .

Phazer mods
It is fun to work on the old Phazer. My '86 has nearly 16,000 miles on it. Thought I would send a pic of the long track mod I did. Its a 133"X1.5" that I got for free because it's an odd size. To make it fit, I just lowered and moved back the skid mounts about 3". Then made my own rail extensions. As you can see in the photo, I can adjust the extension if I decide to go to a 136" in the future (Didn't want to be stuck searching for an odd track size again, like the OEM track).
The track makes a huge difference. I can go places I would think of before.
I would like to put some plastic skis on it. Then, I might play with the engine.
