There's a write up in the TECH pages on how to bore a silencer out(not a complete gutting). Last time I looked at it, it looked pretty simple.

from other things i've read on this site i dont think you can gut a viper silencer because of the way the chambers are arranged but i cold be wrong

This is true but it can be done to a viper. It won't give you more HP but it does give it a little more rumble. I love the looks on the cops faces when I show them a stock can,lol

I cut one open a couple years ago with a plasma cutter. There are three basically hollow chambers in it. I looked it over with a machinist from my work that is also a sledhead. We could not find anyway to achieve what you are talking about that would make much of a difference. Secondly, the pipe itself has baffles internally which also cuts down the sound on this sled. When I messed around with a couple aftermarket silencers, it still didn't sound that nice IMO. Not anything like the non valved 700 does. I'll look on my home computer. I think I still have the photos of it cut open.

i cut mine open with a plasma cutter as well....there are i believe 3 different sections that i cut off to get a good view of the inside "guts".....i removed some of the perf metal and welded it back together....a little bit more sound compared to a stock can, but not super noticable like others have mentioned with a non pv can....its alot of work and trying to weld it back together can be tricky because of the type of metal and its pretty thin....so all in all, it is doable and you will get a little more sound.

Sorry, but I wouldn't do that either...unless you want to go slower. Been there and tried it. Seriously, unless you don't care about performance. I've been through this whole scenerio. I wish the Viper had a nicer sound like the old 700SX did with the single pipe, but Yamaha really did their homework on this one keeping it quiet and nothing left on the table unless you go with triples. Been there and done that too. I like the reliability of the stock exhaust. Spend your money on traction, clutching and suspension. Just my 2 cents.

I got the longest drill bit extention i could find and a 1" hoe saw bit like the ones you use to cut handle holes in doors. Take one hole out. It makes it louder but not like a can louder and i haven't seen and loss in power.

I don't think you will lose power with the stock can unless you seriously compromise it. But I agree, getting much better sound out of it is unlikely and to me a waste of time. JMO.......
