what is the general rule of thumb when choosing a different helix? for example, my dad's 98 xtc 600 has a 47deg helix stock. let's say we would like to go to a mult-angle helix. Would the norm be to go 3 deg each way and then we would choose a 50-44?
 

Well from what I hear that is the hot setup for that year 600 twin engine's, 8ab weights, 50/44 helix, and green secondary spring wrapped to 60. clutch it to engage at 4000 and top out at 7800...but I have no clue if that is a general rule of thumb or not.
 
I'm not talking a general rule of thumb for this xtc 600. I'm talking a general rule of thumb for all makes and models. lets say I had a srx 700 and the stock helix is 47, would I go 3, 4, or even deg both ways and be running a 50/44, 51/43, or 52/42? So, for any sled, at least when you start playing around with multi-angle helixs, just go like 3 deg both ways of the stock helix as ballpark, and then fine tune from there?
 
You can go higher a few degrees and finish at the stock angle or go slightly higher and finish a bit lower than stock, but load the tips of your weights heavier if you do the latter. This is done sometimes for a better backshift. I am not sure about the 47 degree being stock on that sled though. I had a 1997 SX600 (which did run different weight arms than the XTC) but it used a 43 degree helix. Many people ran the SX weights in the XTC in lue of the stock ones which were less aggressive.

My '97 was dialed real well. Here's what I did:

*Thin head gasket (.6mm...1.4mm was stock) Run Premo fuel only, but this is a huge gain for those 600 twins
*Stock SX weights, I ran a Reichard Perf. spring with a 50KG preload and about 107 to 110KG shift rate(yellow/org)
*Hauck nickel plated 47-43 deg. helix @60-70 deg. twist, green spring
*Camoplast #9793 1" stagger Challenger track. 32lbs.......big top end gain
* there was actually ONE silencer that gained performance on this sled.....The GYT/Bender nickel plated one. I had one and in testing found a 1-2 sled length gains in 1000' runs.

NOTE: as for stock helixes.....my 600 had a 43 deg like I said. My 2001 700SXR had a 45 deg. and Vipers and SRX's have a 47 deg. helix.
