I'm ashamed to ask this question here. It's not my sled and it may be helpful to others.
I'm working on a '95 zr700 We've cleaned the carbs, checked spark, installed several new plugs. The thing runs like an arctic cat. Won't idle unless choke is pulled. Off idle it still runs like crap with or without the choke. The only way it starts cold is by putting gas down carbs.
The carbs are clean, dip tank clean. carbs are full of fuel.
He's a Yamaha man and got the thing for free and is tired of sticking money into it.
I'm guessing seals?

Sounds just like plugged pilot jets to me.
maybe faulty fuel pump?

My advice would be to start trouble shooting. Leak down, carb cleaning, gaskets, exhaust leaks, fuel/oil/choke cable adjustments. I used to have one of those cat twins. I will never own one again. Nothing but problems....finally blew up.

When you get it running have him spray some carb cleaner around the pto seal and see if it wants to stall if it does then you know where the problem lies. Are you sure that there are no other leaks like a base gasket intake manifold. How many miles? It may need rings or rings could be stuck. But to me poor running and only on choke like you state could mean Low compression or an air leak somewhere. Does it run better up top?racerdan said:I'm ashamed to ask this question here. Carbs are clean
I dip tanked the carbs and all jets. So Carbs are good. ( I've tried to get him to junk sled and sell me the 40mm carbs for my SRX.)
Didn't have compression tester at time, but compression "felt ok".
Choke cable adjustment dosn't seem to be too bad.
I'm thinking Air leak also. I'll try carb. cleaner idea.
On track stand even at top-end it runs like crap.

did u take the pilots out and blow threw and check if u can see light threw them or just soak the hole carb? if u just soaked them with out checking to see if u can see threw them they still could be tarnished up. if u did id say its a air leak some where.
I had a ZR580 once.. what a peice of crap..
check your carb boots.. they are known to crack.. and draw air in. Check your base gasket for leaks..

fuel filter maybe? I had this problem on an old sled, i had to keep it going with the choke. When i took the fuel filter out it was frozen with water inside. Its not getting Gas for some reason.
