washers on shaft behind secondary

as some of you know i rebuilt my 01 srx from the ground up, i got it for cheap, but the previous owner ****ed up on everything he toutched lol. Now when i took it apart there wasent any washers behind the secondary, there are 2 thin washers on the bolt side tho (plus the thick one that doesent slide on the bushing) I checked the center to center when i put the motor back in, so thats ok) But i never checked the offset tho. My friend who has a 02 says he never puts washers behind the secondary so i rebuilt mine that way and have about 800 trouble free miles out of it now. The secondary is allowed to mave on the shaft anyways so what is the purpose of the washers? thanks

The purpose of the washers is to set belt deflection, it spreds or narrows
the gap between the two sheave halves on the secondary..

Oh ok...lol read it wrong...

those are for self aligning of the belt, you only want a certain amount of
free play and no more.

spec is 1-2mm(feeler gauge)

not sure, more belt/ shaft wear maybe, i always use washers, set to spec..

daman do you a pic of the service manual that shows this? i have no washers and if remeber right i have like atleast 1/8 free play!

turbor, go into the thread called yamaha service manual downloads, or something like that. its in the srx/viper forum. scroll down the page and there will be some links in someones reply, to click on, to download the entire service manual for free. then print it out if desired, or look it up on your computer when ever you need to reference it.

thanks downloaded it, will be of great use! specs are 1-2mm, i have 3.2mm freeplay with a 1mm and a 0.5mm washer, is that normal that i will need that many washer more to get the freeplay to spec? i thought there where washers that went behind the secondary, seems not, only in the front by the manual

edit, i saw that there is indeed washers that go behind it, how do i adjust? put washers behind until i get the correct alignment with the primary ( around 13 to 16mm if i remeber correctly) then put washers in the front till i get the correct free play (1 to 2mm) ? now that would make sense, why i have so mutch gap there

item number 28 is what im talking about, i have none on mine

A certain one goes behind the rest go in front, check a parts fich..

3 goes behind;

90201-25526-00
90201-25527-00

front, you'll need the collar if you don't have one

90201-222F0-00 WASHER,PLATE
90201-225A4-00 WASHER,PLATE
90387-1407L-00 COLLAR
90201-141A3-00 WASHER,PLATE

there different thicknesses also so order what ever you'll need to get the

Parts fiche shows the 3 behind but my 01 service manual does not show any behind and 3 infront plus the shim.

exactly thats why im still wondering what to do?

I have 2 Sleds, A MM700 and a MM600. They both never have never had the washers behind the clutch. I have put on many miles on both and no issues.

some show it(manual) and some don't, my '97 v-4 has them, my XTC manual show;s them, but my srx manual does not but the part fich shows them,so it may be up to you if you want to put them in, i can't remember if my x has them the last time i had the secondary off..

My 98 MM700 doesn't have them, but i'm going to get some. Replaced the bearing behind the secondary this year and the old one had been rubbed pretty hard by the clutch. Service manual I have doesn't show them but the dealer's fiche does.

I think that I am going to be very glad about signing up to this site.

Am I reading it right that the secondary should appear loose on the shaft. I just had to change a clutch spring in the primary and noticed the secondary had some play to it. I found a washer/shim and added it so that there was no "freeplay" and the secondary was tight. From what I read here it is a no no. Would this be correct ?

Thanks,

I will have to measure to see what amount of play that is there and remove that shim for sure.

Just curious - what would removing all of the freeplay do if I had not caught this error with your help.
