I have picked up a 97 sx rear heat xchanger, but noticed O.D on viper transfer tube is 1" & 97sx heat xchanger O.D 3/4",do i have the wrong heat xchanger or do i use a smaller gear clamp. Any suggestions would be helpful.

use some a screw hose clamp so can realy tighten it then just check for leakes. if it doesnt leak while running then ur all set

you need a SRX,Viper mountain, venom heat exchanger, your trying to use
the wrong one...srx is a bigger cooler,it'll cool allot better better then the
smaller sx,vamax one..

I remember some using the SX exchanger and using a piece of the smaller tube inside the Viper hose.

Yamaha had a cheap Viper add-on exchanger for under $60. Might be worth checking into if you want the stock one.

Yeh, that's the wrong heat exhanger. I put on the one that Bender used to make. It was a pretty simple job - about 20 minutes with a drill and a rivet gun. Fit perfectly and has been working well for 4 years 4000 miles.

I will be putting a viper rear cooler on this week, any tips to the install and bleed? Do I need to take off the rear flap? Should I pinch off the rear hoses to the cooler or just let it spill out? thanks for the info guys.

IIRC the flap needs to come off and you'll have to drill out some rivets on the rear tunnel brace. You're gonna spill some antifreeze no matter what you do, so obviously you'll need some extra on hand. Bleeding is simple - get the rear in the air higher than the reservoir, run the sled to temp, loosen (but don't remove) the bleed screw in the rear, on the heat exchanger, until bubbles stop coming out.

GCsx700, That cooler WILL indeed work, as you have found out the hoses are a little differnt sizes, I just use automotive molded heater hose#3/4" and the end that goes on the heat exchanger(runningboard) will need to be submersed in boiling water for a couple minutes, it will then stretch right over the larger hose barb, I have installed these on a few vipers and they are a big improvement over the stock tube. They add less weight then the srx exchanger does, as long as your not running triple pipes the sx exchanger will be fine once you correct the hose size.
