hi guys just bought a 02 viper for my wife and the starter is making a noise when its engaging, it starts the sled but there is something not right with it just wondering if anyone can give me a starting point,its a new battery too

Starter gear/s,shaft, may be bad,pull starter and have a look.

as daman said, i have seen where the starter is bad it will engage the clutch while its running.....this can cause alot of damage. take a peak at the starter with the sled idling, you should be able to see the starter gear engaging and touching the clutch gear and that is the noise you are hearing.

thanks for your input, like i said ive never pulled a starter can u give me any pointers or advise on pulling it
I'd even back it up a step and make sure the gear on the back of the primary is on tight and in good shape. Then get into the starter.
