can I cut the end off the hot grip to install hooks???? If so how much?
This is on a 2002 Viper factory bar & grips.
I would like to narrow the bars alittle, they seem too wide when boondocking thru the trees etc..

If you have heated grips don't do it. Wait for others feedback but if they are like another machine I changed grips on. There is a heating foil under the grips. If your knife or blade goes through the rubber. You have screwed the foil. The traces will have been cut and virtually impossible to repair. Some really old designes had heaters in the bars and worked well.
Be certain unless you don't care about every having heat again.

I've done it a couple of times to our sleds. I cut/drilled the hole right in the end of the grip. On my sleds there were no heating wires in the outside end of the grip. If you cut the bars you will have move the grips as there are wires in the grip part that you grab onto.
Now just because this worked for me doesn't mean it positively will for you.

You can't cut the grip without screwing up the wires. So to narrow the bars you'll have to pull the grips, cut the bars, move the controls, and reinstall the grips. Shouldn't be to big of a job. Just have to make sure that you don't trim them so much that there is not room left for the controls and the grips.

You can drill the ends but nothing else...I noticed last year when I installed mine...the bars needed to be shorter much like you described...I drilled a hole in the end..but it was useless...the hooks need to be an extension of the grips inorder to ride like you want...I never got my hands that far out to take advantage of them(hand was either off the brake or throttle)...and what a pain in the butt to put on the cover...yeeesh...
As for the electrical side of the grips..they extend through out the grip...trust me..I tried on the throttle/brake side to make room for Handguard mount...within 3 cuts I cut the foil and wires...eeeouuchh!!!...
good luck..

I just chucked a rasp in a drill and ground away a hole direcly in line with the bar end and same size hole as the inside diameter of the bar, put the hook in up against the rubber of the end of the grip, than took sandpaper and ground down the ridge after tightening the hook...SNAKEBIT.. said:can I cut the end off the hot grip to install hooks???? Instead of moving the grip inwards after cutting the bar. Could you just make the end of the rubber grips go up the hooks after installing them?

GUYS I aready drilled the hole and installed the hooks, now I decided I want to NARROW the bars so I need to cut the ends off, just wanted to cut off a 1" or so off the grip. I might try the grip over the first part of the hook?? might be what I want?

You can't cut off the end of the grip, just start from scratch and do what BigMac said it will work. Be sure to use slow dry epoxy for grips and tighten hooks when it they are really cold. If your install them in a warm garage and then ride in sub 0 temps they will shrink and fall out.
