My buddy is ringing his 00 sx700r all went well on #2 and #3. when it came to puting the cylinder back on #1, the rings would compress but not far enough to let the cylinder slide down. He just put new rings on and used the old pistons. Is this carbon build up? can it be fixed and used? Or should the piston be replaced? let me know what you guys think.
Thanks
Chris

try to put the rings in the bore of the cylinder by themselves to check the ring end gap. If you can't get them to go in the cylinder then you may have to adjust the gap VERY carefully by hand with a file, or exchange the rings for a new set.

ring gap
He checked the gap like that on all 6 of the rings. He took an old ring, broke it then tried to use that to clean the ring groove. He said he was carefull but is that a good idea to do that anyway?

Did he put a new ring in that cylinder pushed it down a third of the way, even to the top of the cylinder & used a feeler gauge to verify the end gap...cleaning the ring groove like that was o.k., did the ring move out of the locating pin when he tried to install that on or was the ring catching a port half way up...what method is he install that piston/cylinder...is the piston attached to the rod & then installing the cylinder or is the piston in the cylinder, then he is attaching it to the rod...

the ring stayed rite on the locating pin like it was supposed to. it seems like it wont compress into the groove all the way. The guys at yamaha here said its possible the the ring has a bad grind on it? But they got him another box of rings so hopefully that will solve it. Thanks for the help guys!

piston rings
Is the piston ring upside down ? The rings are shaped to fit around locating pin .
