What causes this? Ever since my stator died and I replaced it my sled seems to start a bit harder and the lights on dash, headlight and brake all dim a lot when i hit the brake lever or switch between high and low beam. I also want to add I replaced my cdi before I fixed it with the stator so Im wondering if putting my original cdi back in would help or not. What do you guys think? CaN A stator with low voltage do this or am I over analizing.
Mrviper700 tipped me off to possible a rub through under the fuel tank...he was right, I had my seat off & I remember pulling on the leads to the rear lights & guess what, a rub through I had to pull it out towards the engine bay to see it...also check your tail light pigtail for corrosion & any other connection for green residue as that indicates a bad connection...when I did all my connection inspections I dabbed the ends with di-electrical grease...cheers

Yes you could have the rearlight harness rub through, very common, you said you replaced the stator, where did you get it? On a 99' you will see the lights dim at idle but you shouldn't while running, if thats what you are asking.

Thanks for the input guys. I havnt checked the wire that runs under the gas tank to seat yet, that is the first place Ill check. 800, I got the stator from someone on here and when I say the lights dim I only mean if Im idleing and sqeeze the brake lever the tach and headlight ect dim a bit. Also when I switch between hight low beam at idle. As soon as I crack the throttle everything brightens right up like perfect.

It may be normal, the early lighting system will do that at idle, thats why I asked, Or the used stator you bought is on the weak side. If you had a short under the tank, when you hit the brakes the lights will cut down to like half.
Put a led tail light in it, problem solved. Maxdlx
Not to discredit you, Max...I did the same on my viper last season with the rear LED's but, most of the guys I ride with say they can barely see my tail light in the day time and at night with the snow dust the LED's do not provide enough heat to melt the lens clear...I since have gone back to the oem's as well as to the back of the pack so to speak...unless they were just saying that cause they don't like it that I'm out front...in front of four strokes....Hhhhmmmmm!!!!maxdlx said:Put a led tail light in it, problem solved. I have been searching for an electrical problem in mine for the last couple of days. It started out when I hit the brake or the high/low beam my gauge pod would shut off and then come back on. I figured it was the notorious harness rub through, so I pulled my pipes and went through my harness that runs under the motor. Didn't find any obvious wear marks, opened up outer jacket and searched through each individual wire. Can't find a rub anywhere. Taped the harness back up and re-installed.
Started sled and now it does what yours is doing. My gauge pod doesn't shut off, but the head light dims way down when I hit the brake. I went ahead and pulled the seat and checked the wires under the gas tank, no rub-throughs there either. With the brake/tail light harness unplugged under the seat, the headlight no longer dims. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. I checked the bulbs and connections in the tail lights, they looked fine. Also went through the steering column to check for rubs there.
Since the pod no longer shuts off and changed to dimming the headlight after I messed with the harness under the motor, I think I'll go back through it again. I'll tape up each individual wire the whole length if I have to. This kind of thing can be a PIA to find...

Do you have the stock wattage headlight bulb? And do you have a heated shield?
