655 miles, always kept my eye on the plugs and compression. It didn't seize, but it started to. Middle cylinder again!!!!!! This time I had antifreeze burning up in that cylinder. WTF

I haven't gone into it yet, but the plug got bent right over and by putting a finger over the hole it def lost compression compared to the others. Look in the classified section for a mint 99 Srx 700 part out. I'm done with this sled...
:o| #$%&* :dunno:

Is it still together, if you can run it...it would be for a short time just to do a propane test on the boots, reed blocks...is there signs of exhaust leak on that cylinder...Just putting this out there, no insult intended-ok...did you re torque the cylinders & head after a few heat cycles or miles? did you straight edge the head with a feeler gauge & check the deck level across the cylinders with a straight edges as well?..wow...sorry to hear that-man...keep us posted...

Look for a Viper powerplant and Install that as it has different port timing and would have a wolf in sheeps clothing... Well kinda

Somthng was over looked......again.

It lasted 655 miles compared to 400 when the shop in Connecticut rebuilt it. I checked everything, first ride was 65 miles while doing plug chops. Got back and did a compression check. Did the same at 250 miles, still checked out fine. Last season I held it open for one time for 5-8 seconds and SEIZE. This season I've had numerous WOT runs with no problems, Well until yesterday. I don't know what I could have overlooked, the sled was getting 12-14 mpg, under revving the hole time, and was always warmed up good before riding.

It was pretty sad getting towed by a CAT with 5000+ miles on it, and half of them are WFO miles. I love this sled, but this isn't what I had in mind when buying an SRX. Bad Crank maybe? I don't give a #$%&* because it's worth more now in parts........

I know ya got your mind made up to part it but post up some pic's of the
3 piston's, we can tell ya what happen..

Will do. I'm going to fetch it now from my father's place. Luckily this happened locally, not in Northern Maine where I was going next Wednesday for 5 days. A friend is letting me borrow his Firecat F7 for my trip, so I'll still be riding.

I know all of you guys on here will do whatever you can to help me out, but 3 times and never a clue why it happened. I might buy another one, but it will be a 2000 and up. Too many horror stories of crank problems and I think I might be another one of those.... #$%&*

Something unfortunate happened in your case because there's allot of
'98-'99's running around on this site that are stock and modded with
tons of mileage on them..

after the cranks were trued and welded they were just as good as the
'00-'02's

i am running a 98 SRX with well over 10000 trouble free miles on the stock Pistons. what about carbs did u set/clean them and if so there is always Possibility of over looking dirt in a jet.

Yep. I ran it on a very cold night a few weeks ago, no problems.

was your crank trued and welded? Were all the bearings in good shape on the crank?

example: There are some 670 rotax engines that went forever, but some of them had the gear that drove the rotary valve move on the crank which changed their timing and they would blow(friend had one that blew every 200km after every rebuild until crank change)

most of the crank problems were in the pto cylinders, it could come out in the center cylinder but its not that common. most times they will vibrate alot and its noticeable in the handgrips if they get out to lunch in run out. As someone else said, once the cranks are welded they are every bit as strong as the newer ones.

I would say post up some pics of the pistons and we can see what happened in there and see if we cant solve the puzzle. Its most likely something stupid as always, happens to everyone, dont sweat it.
