Hello everyone, I post awhile back about melting a piston on my 02 SRX
I took it out yesterday for the first time since the rebuild and was taken it easy for the break in and got about 18 miles on it and the temp light started flashing so I stop at looked at the over flow bottle and took the cap off and it didn't spray all over the coolant was only luke warm and is not circulating! Does the SRX have a Thermostat it looks like it does or is the water pump Impellor bad!
I just want some info of where to look first it is to cold to look at it at home I have to take it to work and I want to get in in and out asap you know how bosses can be.
Thanks

you want to check the thermostat, i have seen two that the stat jambs and wont let the sled either cool fast enough when riding fast or warm up at idle. It sticks the cooling in an in between limbo.

stat is in the water rail hooked to the heads.

I read from another post that there is a bleeder screw underneath seat is this true ?
I checked the water pump today and the Impellor is fine, and ordered a new thermostat
would an air pocket stop circulation ?

i'd have to be a big pocket right over the impeller.

yes take the seat off there's a bleeder there, raise the rear up a little wile
pouring in coolant..

OK thanks, I wish I would of known about this last friday before I went up north, We drove 3.5 hours got 18 miles on the sled before the temp light started flashing and loaded up and came home because I didn't want to burn up the fresh piston I just put in, live and learn I guess

what was the code it was flashing?

when the temp light flashes it doesn't always mean an over heat
condition..thats(the temp light) the truble code indacator for the whole sled..

I didn't realize that, I wasn't paying attention is was just flashing!
Where can I get the code list to take with me next tip ?
I'm putting in a new thermostat and will bleed the air out of the system this time and if the light start flashing I will count the flashes and write it down and get back with you

If the thermostat is stuck closed you wont get far and the cap on the overflow tank will be blown off from boiling coolant.Defently blead the systom properly or moter damage will happen.

you should see coolant circulating in the recovery/fill bottle at idle, if its not moving then : 1.) the waterpump impellar is stripped of its splines on the driveshaft, 2.) the brass gear is slipping on the crankshaft.

the thermostat even if stuck closed will show you a slight bit of coolant movement in the tank, this comes from the bleed hole thats in the ring of the thermostat, this is why the htermostat must be carefully installed as the bleed hole needs to align with the relief in the thermostat housing, this allows air to escape the system and to move a small bit of coolant to prevent the rush of ice cold coolant to the warmer engine, it balances out the system.

I didn't see anything on the fault code list about power valves, I only see 7 fault codes! I just replaced 2 power valves before last ride and had my friend adjust them he knew about the 2.5 mm trick.

I checked the water pump yesterday it is fine I had a friend pull the rope while I held the Impellor I couldn't stop it from turning it is nice and tight and the is no damage on impellor!
About the base and head gaskets, I reused the base gasket because it is one piece and I didn't want to pull the other two jugs off, the gasket was fine no tears and the used trim cement to reseal the gasket to the jug, the heads have O ring's 2 of them different sizes so I don't think that is the problem, I believe it is air locked from not bleeding the system, I ordered a new thermostat anyway should be here tomorrow put it back together, bleed it and hope that was it!
