Just got back from a trip to Munising, midway through the week my buddies 98 SRX died on the trail, we started it up & it ran fine for another 5 miles or so it died again and then it wouldn't even pull like it is siezed. Took the plugs out and the pistons or the plugs don't look bad. Could it be a crank bearing? Where do I start? :o|

The only real way to find out is to tear into it. Once you get the cylinders off you will know where the problem is.

I have seen before ( not on yamahas ) the engine locked up and if you turn the primary clutch the opposite way it might fire back up. I have seen this twice now. i think it was a polaris and i was floored when this happened i was thank god i didn't not have to tow this sled home. I think there was a post not to far back where this happened to someone on this site. If it does work something is catching somewhere.

Make sure the plugs are out when you try a turn it over. Sounds like it's broke to me though.

To rebuild the crank youd have more in then it would be worth as the bearings are like a $100 each, then the labor to install and then tru and weld it back up but you could easily find a good used crank in the range of $200-$300.
I guess it would come down to when its apart, the sum of damage and the shape the rest of the motor is in, if its just the crank bearings or if youll also need pistons, rings, gaskets, misc parts, etc.

at the very least I would take it down and then try and sum up the parts needed and get an idea as to the cost needed, sometimes like you say, its not worth it.The sled could be worth more in parts, a 98 srx is only worth about $1500-$1800, this depends on where you live and the shape the sleds in, but the 98-99 sleds dont bring alot of big coin now they are getting older.
