I had a 1998 SRX for 8 years before this 1999 and had no issues.

Cleaned carbs every year. Now I just bought this 1999 and it was fouling the left plug(near clutch)

I cleaned the carbs, and installed new plugs, it now idles good, and if I drive it less than 1/2 throttle, all seems ok, if I floor it, it just noses over, and appears to be running pig rich.

I think maybe the power valves could be a issue, does anyone have any suggestions, is there a way to run them manually, or some other way of testing them?

My other thought was weak coils, however that seems to be a stretch.

Any good advice would be appreciated, I am a good mechanic, so I am willing to test anything. Also if I can't get steered in the right direction, I can borrow my buddies 1998 SRX and swap some parts.

Thanks

Take the cover off the servo motor for the p/v and use the choke to get the sled under 900rpm, As it starts to choke the sled out and kill it the powervalves will activate to try to keep it from stalling the sled. This will at least tell you if the powervalves are being signaled. You still will need to take them out and look for pull troughs and make sure they are adjusted correctly. DO a search on here there is tons of info.

power valves shouldn't effect jetting, but you should pull the valves appart
and inspect/clean and adjust, how do your plugs look??

The plugs were black, and wet before I cleaned the carbs. It had the BR9ECS in it, however they were fouled so bad that it wouldn't run on the PTO side, I installed some brand new BR9ES I had here just to run and test it (I know these can't stay in there) however if I am going to foul some plugs, i would rather them be 1.99 ea vs 6.99 ea.

I pulled the plugs and looked, they are tan in color, if this was my race car, I would say they are perfect.

Not yet, It has 2 different style boots on it, one looks like the boots on my 98 I had, the other ones are quite a bit bigger.

Also what is the best way to ohm the wire since it appears it's part of the coil?

Sorry forgot, jetting is stock.

42.5 on the Pilot Jets, 146.3 and 148.8 on the others. It seemed odd to me that the bigger jet was on the stator side, since it appears to get the coolant first, however according to all the schematics I read this was correct.

I started the sled up, by the way it was sitting for a week (I was out of town) and it started in 2 pulls just like my old one, the servo motor moved when the idle dropped down, however it idles fine.
I also checked the cables, they seem to be fine, I can pull on them, and there is no excessive resistance. there also appears there is no excessive slop.

Here we are, the coils appear to be OK.
#1 Primary .4 Ohms
#2 Primary .4 Ohms
#3 Primary .4 Ohms

I checked the secondary with the boots on because 2 of them seemed they were non-replaceable.

#1 Secondary with boot 11.88 KOhms
#2 Secondary with boot 10.65 KOhms
#3 Secondary with boot 10.88 KOhms

#2 without boot 6.25 KOhms, and the Boot was 4.40 KOhms.

All these numbers look ok to me.

I had another thought, the guy I bought this from stored it outside under a cover, do you think the fuel could be so bad it won't run right??
I suppose this would be a easy next step. empty the tank and fill with fresh and let run a while and try again?
It doesn't smell bad either in the tank, or out the exhaust.

One more quick note, the way the coils appear to be routed, the signal wire comes into Coil #1 then to Coil #3 then to Coil #2 and then back out. Does this seem correct?

I will take it for a quick rip once the neighbors wake up. I also forgot to mention, it has aftermarket HI-TECH E.R secondary, and some mods on the primary. (I bought it this way) the guy I bought it from had it for 2 years, and had gotten it from his brother in-law who bought it new and did all the mods. He said it ran great the last two years, so i have to assume that stuff is OK. Also it had an aftermarket silencer on it. I believe it is a DG. the sled has 1844 miles on it. No studs. My old one was studded up, and had no problem pulling the ski's of the ground, it was a rocket. The track on this one seems similar to one that came stock on the RX-1. (I had one of those, it was not as fast out of the hole as the SRX, it was also to tippy for me. the plus was it rode nice, and had a gob of power between 50-100)

I will go get 5 Gallons of 91 Octane Non-Oxy gas. this is what I run in everything here, it seems to stay fresh the longest. I will pump the tank, and fill with 5 Gal of fresh stuff, Also I have been doing my testing with the air box removed, do you think this makes a difference. Also what are your thoughts about the dividers between the cylinders isolating the air box into 3 separate chambers? My old one had these removed.

not good...put the air box back on and leave it alone,if not knowing what
your doing you could burn it down, runs scary lean with out it..

The box can be modded but like i said you need to know what your doing
with jetting if you go wild with it, i doubt it that's where your problem is..

Well, I put it all back together with a fresh tank of 91 octane Non-Oxy fuel. it started on the first pull (heated garage) I pulled it outside 5 deg F. let it warm up for about 5 minutes. idles at about 1750 the clutch engages at 4000. I can't get it above 6400 RPM, it sounds like the ignition is cutting out. Also when I got back, and let of the throttle it lost all spark, then re fired before coming to a stop, but real random firing. I then was able to get it back into the garage, it rips right up to 6400 and then falls flat on its face.

I am starting to think I might have a bad CDI, any input?

Thanks
