The old V-max just hit 7,000 miles! Anything wrong with just putting new rings in her if the pistons look good? What about wrist pins and bearings? It's still running strong with good comp. (120psi). I'd rather not risk the damage that could happen if she blows!

If your going to go far enough to put new rings in it, I'd just replace everything with OEM Yamaha parts! Pistons, rings, clips and pins That way you know it should all be good to go!
If it aint broke, don't fix it.

she's over due!!!!!!!
7,000 miles i would definitely be doing a top end on it, pull it down mic the
pistons out,if within spec they can be reused.
but IMO since your in there i wouldn't re-use a 7,000 mile piston,
like said use OEM parts only.
Good luck!

Anything wrong with using a set of aftermarket pistons on this old sled? Comes to around $210.00 in parts not including gaskets from the dealer compared to around $100.00 for aftermarket (SPI or OEM brand).

I guess you could, but why cheap out now when in the end it will probably cost you a lot more $$$ Every person on this site will tell you the same thing and to use only Yamaha OEM parts.
Check other places such as, Ronnies.com or powerpartsplus.com
They will probably have cheaper prices than your dealer.

I wouldnt go A/M!!!!!! If you do Id be willing to bet youll be inside that topend in half the miles than what you have on your stockers now. Your just not gunna get the tight tolerences of what Yami makes compared to the A/M company out there. What size/model Yami are we talking about here???

WOW! 7000 ! I was thinking of doing mine this summer. I just turned 2,000 last year. And yeah, I agree. While your going that far definately replace everything. Definately lube everything ( pins, bearings, rings, cylinder walls) with whatever 2 stroke oil your using during assembly.

Got a few more questions for you guys:
Do the rings and cylinder walls wear about the same?
How many topend rebuilds can a sled usually handle?
How do I prepare the old cylinder walls for the new rings?
Should I replace the upper connecting rod bearing and does it come out easy?
Thanks, FishX
