My friends exhaust keeps popping off the motor. Last night we were putting a rear heat exchanger on it and I opened the hood and saw that one of the springs from the manifold to the pipe was gone, it was laying in there busted off from the exhaust trying to pop off. I know I've read about this before but I searched and couldn't find anything. What causes this? It's a 97 XTC 600 with a fresh top end and the .6mm head gasket.

When you install new exhaust springs, lay a 1/8-1/4" bead of RTV Copper along the entire length of the spring. This will help keep the vibration to a minimum on the springs. Trust me, it DOES help!

Make sure the exhaust donut that goes around the y-pipe is good.

I had this happen once on a 600 twin. I changed the springs. I added the silicone to the length as stated above. That was 4 years ago. Haven't had a problem since.

Yeah I told him about doing that to the springs last night, when I put my pipes on last year I had read some posts about doing that and was gonna do it to mine but I constantly have the pipes off so I haven't yet. He was just thinking there was possibly something wrong with the motor, but it runs great so I'll tell him he needs to just put the silicone on the springs. Thanks.
