Is it much of a job to replace the cooling fan? Do you replace just the blade assembly or the complete piece with shroud? Any help is appreciated. Mine is missing a couple blades (1996).

The blade is molded to the shaft and must be replaced as an assembly. The fan tower must be removed to do the job. It's not to difficult and can be done with the engine in the sled. The pipe, recoil, recoil cup, lower pulley and right front engine mount must be removed before the tower can be removed. Check the bearings for the fan to make sure they are good. I have a perfect fan assembly for a Phazer with bearings, top and bottom pulleys and belt if you need them. $35 + shipping. 262-767-9023

Thanks! That's the information I was looking for. Sent you a PM. I need to get a manual for this sled, as it looks like I am going to need it.
I also need the upper engine shroud if anyone has one. A blade broke off and put a hole in the front. Guess I should have expected some issues when buying a '96 for only 500.00 but I'd rather be riding than wrenching.

Thanks very much for your help Phil! Here's a photo of my boy's sled so far. 500.00 for the sled, 60.00 for drive chain and gear, 200.00 for the hood, side panels and windshield after a dumb Dad "mishap" on the maiden voyage last weekend, (coulda done without that) then a fan blade breaks off! I sure hope to get some riding time in with my son very soon...

If it has electric start you will need to remove the flywheel and starter - the ring gear will not allow the housing to come off. That makes it a bigger job. I am in the process of that right now.
My guess is that something entered into the air intake and caused the broken blade. (The **** hit the fan!)
Nice looking sled.
A 96 Phazer that looks like that for 500 bucks? Where am I when those deals come along?

Seriously-you got a geat deal on a great sled. There are also plenty of good used parts for these sleds floating around-you can check on this site, hit ebay, etc. and pretty much find whatever you need.

Thanks! I dug a hard rubber piece from an old drive belt failure from inside the cooling shroud. I assume that made it into the air intake and eventually got caught in the fan blades. In any event, I've ridden it just far enough where I can tell the sled seems to run great. Has plenty of pep after gearing down a tooth when I replaced the chain and gears. Shoulda seen the '97 parts donor sled at the snowmobile graveyard that I got the panels from. 700 miles on it and it looked very nice. Engine was gone already. It was a good find for me.

Got the sled running again last night. Seems to be working really well. Thanks a lot for the help on the phone Phil, concerning the fan bearing replacement. It was a 5 minute job after I spoke with you. Appreciate the repacked bearings you sent. Mine were toasted and black. I expected a 2 hour job but took about twice that. Tough getting some of those small bolts started when you can barely reach your fingers in there. I hope I don't have the fan belt too tight...I'm used to automotive belts.

Fan belt tightness spec: When pushed at the center of the belt, 5/16 deflection at 9 to 13 pounds.

Thanks! I'm probably ok then. That's not much deflection at the center. Hey, the thing is going around and has all of it's blades, so I'm ahead of the game...
