Great forum !
I have a stock 98 Mountain SRX , was out on Saturday in like 8 ft of powder with my son who is riding a mod. 1998 MM700 that is piped, dropped and rolled, eikolm tunnel and 148" track. I spent more time digging myself out than riding ! THE MM broke trail and never got stuck at all.
I have been told than one of the major problems with the 98 SRX is that the track angle is way too steep and all it does is trench and dig deeper. I have thought about a track extension to at least 140" or 144" or a whole kit to 156" but I have been told that won't solve much..... moving the the whole skid back.... would this solve the approach angle problem? Is there kits out there that I guy can buy to change this or is this a total custom job? Anything to point me in the right direction and hopefully not have to spend $1000's.... Oh I am 6' 1", 200lbs and have not played with the suspension at all and I am buying some new Simmons ski's for better float !
Thanks All,

Probably the cheapest way of doing this would be to buy a skid (polaris edge or ski-doo SC-10). This saves alot of weight and gives alot better weight transfer. While your at it put a minimum 151 or prferably 159 track................SRXtreme
Thanks Man ! I will look into that further.

yes but...
If you haven't already you would want to pull up your skid straps and run a 2" or greater track and bring your gearing up to around 200 (check the gearing charts in the TY tech section). I would also check into Yamaha's recent mountains skis, they're relatively cheap and they work great on my '98 MSRX (needs a bushing kit).

yes but...
...the Mountain SRX isn't the lightest sled particularly in 8' of snow, that's probably why Yamaha made them one year only. Anything you can do to lighten this sled up will certainly help...it's a Mountain Max on steroids!
relocating the skid to accept a longer track will reduce the track angle to near mtn specifics. easily done yourself if you have the ability. hartman makes a complete kit which installs easily. 144" tracks are easy to find. the mtn srx likes to nose dive so there are some tricks for the front end as well.
I did a rear skid relocation on mine & went to a 2" track. It worked very well.

I have a 98 Mountain Max, which has the same skidframe you have, I did the skid relocation and put on a 141 track. This alone made a big difference in how much easier the machine got out of the snow, and also made boondocking quite a bit easier. For this year I put on rail extensions and a 151 track, now it really goes in the deep stuff.
Cool so is it best to buy a kit from Hartman then and go hard, I am mechanicaly inclined, could I guy do it over a weekend? Someone name Sandy C up in my part of the country ( British Columbia) says a 2000 and up MM 144 skid will fit into my SRX, then a track extension to go up to a 151". Does this make sense !
Thanks,
Kevin

you can do it in a couple hours as a relocate to 141 or 144. 151 will require a tunnel extension which leads to longer cooling hoses, covers, ect. the 98 mtnsrx came with a 136. to go 141, all skid mounting locations move back 2.5". they also move down slightly, incremental to moving back. pick a track lenghth and i can walk you through it. 141, easiest. heavy track hard to find. 144 good for all around, more readily available. 151 best for deep snow, more work to keep the stock appearance on tunnel. look into a transfer enhancement kit from mtn perf or make your own regardless of what track lenghth you go with.

While it is apart add 8 tooth anti-ratchet drivers, i agree on the mtn preformance transfer kit, new yamaha mtn skis are cheap and work well and 151 will keep you happier longer. Hartman has everything you need and the instructions to walk you through it.
Hi, MTN performance looks like the best approach they have everything a guy needs. Instead of screwing around I think I will shoot for a 151" tunnel package, new track, transfer enhancement kit and whatever else they or you forum GURU's recommend and do it right the first time ! I am going to phone MTN Perf tommorrow. Cool ! It is -22Celius here so won't be ridding for awhile !
just checked out Hartman Inc. as well decisions, decisions. Need some input on who everyone recommends.
Thanks again,
Kevin

I used the Mountain Performance kit, but others on the site have used Hartman with good results. Can't go wrong either way. Kits come with templates to relocate your skid and the appropriate tunnel, coolant hoses and rail extensions to fit the track length you choose. Mountain Performance recommended a new drive axle as they have had customers report breaking their old one. I bought a new axle complete with 8 tooth extroverts installed. Definitely go 151" right away, as you will want it next year anyway. I did mine in 2 days doing it after work in the evenings.

Ditch the stock skid!!!! Trust me on this one. It is nothing but an overweight POS. You could sell your rear shocks for probably what a doo or polaris skid will cost you. On top of that you will save around 25lbs of weight...................SRXtreme
I'm working on putting a 136 Polaris skid with Holz coilover kit in my 144 srx right now. Unbelievable the weight difference. I'm guessing it will save 30 - 40lbs from my 121 yam skid with the extension on it. Now if it would snow here in the flatlands of MN I'd actually get to use it.
