something seized up in my 1976 yamaha exciter 440 engine. i have a 1980 yamaha 440 engine. i believe they are both ss433. it looks exactly the same except for the older one has two coils and the 1980 one has one coil. the older one also has more wires coming off of the magneto. does anyone know what each color of wire does off each year? can i just swap the magneto/stator from the old engine to the new one? is there a certain way to reinstall it on the other engine? i can see there is a keyway.

how do i pull the magneto off? with a harmonic balancer or steering wheel puller?

thanks,
jeff

Wires

You can do both ways. Pay attention to what wire is connected where before removing the motor !
Using the new motor with the coil pack removed, plug it in the way it was. You should have spark ! If not try Grey and Orange to the old coils. Black to Black and I think the Red is lights from the mag.

Or install the new motor with the new coil on it, and eliminate / bypass the two old coils. You should have spark ! The extra wires are for elec start and accessory's.
The different year motors had different coil packs and common voltage regulators.

There are many differences in the 76-81 Exciter's. Electrical, carbs, oil injection, gauge location, harness's seat's etc. Many of the parts are interchangable between years and the engines can be swapped but in your case with a 76 sled and an 80 engine to install, the best thing to do is to strip both engines down to the long block ( crankcase, crank, cylinders, heads) and swap ALL you 76 parts onto the 80 longblock. Here is a list of things that are different between the two engines, complete ignition systems, carb and boot, oil pump and cable. There are many more between the chassies and the parts I mentioned on the 80 engine arn't compatable with the 76 chassie. You will spend more time trying to make them work than it would take to just change them. Also the engine serial # is stamped into the fan housing so if swap it as well you will still have a #'s matching sled. Don't try to marry the two igniton systems as it won't work. The only major difference in the two longblocks is that the early engines had single ring pistons and the later had double which won't bother anything.

Good Luck, opsled

the one with two coils from the 1976 says that it is a ss433 on the black side case. with that said, i did swap the stator and magneto over onto my 1976 sled off of the 1980 sled. i had to use the 1976 carburator, the 1976 oil injection, and the intake manifold off the 1976, however, i messed up the rubber connector to the hold the intake manifold and the carburator together. anyone know where i can get one of these rubber pieces?

i also had the bolts turned in too far when i was using the balancer puller to get the magneto off. i messed up the outside lighting coil. anyone know where i can get one of those?

just curious what is the difference between a y433 and a ss433 engine?

what year/model sled did this engine come off of? the number on the pull start cover is Y433-062312
