I know this is a Yami forum but I really trust everyone's opinions on this site. I'm thinking about picking up a mint 99 ZRT 600 with 2400 miles on it. It looks brand spankin new inside and out, even the pipes look new. I've been riding it a little the last few weeks and she feels really nice. Price will be around $1500.00 maybe less. O.K, go ahead and start with the sitting on the side of the trail jokes!!!!!!
We ride with some guys that have cats. I think the one is a 99/00 zr 600. It runs pretty decent. They've had some issues that may have been more maintenance related that caused some high dollar repair. It smoked my 96 off of the line and then kept me from reeling him in. Price sounds low enough....

They usally perform very well, is it a power valve motor? If it is in as good as shape as you say than at 1500 you can't go wrong.

I know two guys that have that motor in the older cat Powder Extremes and they are both still going strong. That's a good price for that machine.

it is a decent sled, and that IIRC is the first year of the lower weight ZRT's. I think they got power valves in 00, though. not quite sure of that.
A friend of mine still has his 96 zrt6. he had very few issues with that one, besides the abnormally high bearing failures in skids, and shafts, but that is a typical cat issue.
He did have a motor bolt shear off and that killed a belt. This happened when we swapped sleds, so maybe his cat just did not like me?
And yeah, the shocks needed rebuilding, but those were the old fox units and IIRC the 99 has the arctic in house shocks on them. like before though, that is normal maintenance.

Thanks Boys! I did notice that the suspension is sagging pretty bad so I'm gonna take a better look at it next week. I don't think it's a big deal but you never know. I was impressed by how hard she pulled for a 600. Anyone know if the travel is pretty good on the 99 skid? Still going to keep the trusty old V-max!

Being a 1999 it is not the AV motor, it also is the first year of the new chassie ( 99-02 ) all the same basic chasssie / looks they changed it up a lil bit in 2002 with wider running boards and such... suspension is alot better then any yammy, itll ride great, also once you have it set-up that extra lil weight over the skis really keeps it planted in the corners, no major problems with the 99s, new pipes and such compared to the 1998 but theyre werent any issues, clutch it and its a great maching, not quite the power or fuel economy of a 2001 and up with the valves however.
Edit: travell should be 12" roughly.
Edit #2: That guy up there has a problem with cat bearings, check them all and replace the drive shaft bearings every 3000miles and youll be fine...

Rooster,
for a "cat hater" I was able to call every one of the points out in my first post correctly. I hope you are impressed ROTFL
no PV til 00, first year of new chassis, and he did , like every one else in our group that rides cats, has had more bearing issues (sub 3k mileage as well) than any non cat rider.
I just call it like I see it, no offense is meant.

I went with the cheap VXB bearings sold on E-bay (10 for $6.95) and got over 4,000 miles on them! I ordered ten of each: 6204-2Rs and 6004-2Rs. I finally had to replace a couple last week. I've also got over 4,000 miles on a VXB jackshaft bearing.

Anyone ever hear about 99 ZRTs losing cranks at around 5,000 miles? I don't mind doing topends but wouldn't want to mess with the bottom. Got about a week to make up my mind. What year and model Yamahas had good suspensions in them? Keep in mind that I've been riding a 95 V-max!

Most likely lost the crank due to the top end, rings being warn then seizing a cylinder taking out the bottom.
If its in mint shape it should be a great sled havent heard any big problems with them, we went with the 01 due to the powervalves, more power and better fuel economy...
