Anybody have any experience with moving the rivets to different positions and impact of change to engagement rpm.

I believe stock used 2 rivets in the outer two holes of the weights.

Gettinig ready to re-build the stock clutch and was just wondering what to expect if I just went with one rivet in the outer most hole or did the inside hole and outside leaving the middle empty.

Just looking for a little higher engagement than the stock 3300 or am I better off just going to a stiffer spring.

Any input appreciated

DUDE, CLUTCHING HAS CHANGED MUCH. YAMAHA,s THAN ARE SIMILAR TO YAMAHA,s TODAY. BEST WAY TO DO THIS IS GET A GRAM SCALE. REMEMEBER ADDING WEIGHT TO TIP WILL USUALLY BRING RPM DOWN. LESS WEIGHT AT TIP WILL RAISE RPM. PRETTY MUCH THE SPRING CONTROLS ENGAGEMENT, BUT THE WEIGHTS COULD BE NOTCHED FOR ENGAGEMENT. QUICK CRASH CORSE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Thanks YAMMI

Crash course regergitation just to make sure I have it.

If I'm happy with shift out, but want higher engagement then play with the spring only unless I want to get into notching (not for this sled, it will be my trail rider but will see some lake action).

I have new OEM stock weights and rivets. Don't know what the stock weight of these are, haven't had a gram scale for 20 years now (never thought I'd need it again)

Don't know if this true in all cases, but my experience with this vintage of Yam has a bit of bog just off throttle. Some I expect to be lean caused so I've got the fuel screw on the butterfly keihin opened an extra half. She's only been tested on the stand but right now it's set were I have the least hesitation from idle to pinned.

Saturday I'll be re-building the clutch (rivets into the weights included) and Sunday I'll get some real testing in. So if anyone has eliminated one rivet (middle or outside) and has seen an overall improvement off throttel I'd be interested in the set-up

As of right now I'll just go back to stock. But I am looking for an edge over my 50lb lighter buddy on his stock 79. Maybe my extra baggage will just give me better hook up and it wont be an issue.

Thanks for the input YAMMIE

I WOULD SAY YOU GOT IT NARROWED DOWN, ONLY THING ON ENGAGEMENT, HAVE TO BECAREFUL IF YOUR LOOKING TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER ENGAGEMENT BY CHANGEING SPRINGS. SEE THIS MEANS YOU NEED A SPRING WITH MORE PRE-LOAD AND YES, THATS GONNA AFFECT YOUR PEAK. NOW WITH ADDED WEIGHT TO THE TIP, THIS CAN CAUSE UNDER REV, HAVE TO FINE THAT SWEET SPOT, THATS WHY NOTCHS DID WORK NICE ON THE OLD SLEDS WITH VERY NARROW POWERBANDS. 78 EXCITERS WERE ROCKETS. GET IT OUT AND PLAY. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I too have been looking to change just my initial on my 77, I am hoping to find that magic spring tonight... ARE you running a 102C? that is what is on my sled.

Stock

Steely,

I'm running the stock clutch. I left the middle rivet out of the weights as a test and I don't recommend that set up. Not enough squeeze on the belt, causing some slip at engagement and also anytime I go to get back on the throttle.

So from Yammies lesson. For engagement look for a spring with a higher preload. If you're happy with how it shifts then you'd want the compression rate to be the same.
