i need to know what an 87 exciter should turn for top rpms and what pos. the secondary spring should be in.any clutching suggestions would be great.
thank you.

can anyone give me any info on the stock setup? what works what doesn't etc.i have a 108 clutch with a silver spring(85lbs eng. & 190 shift) and a1's(48.5).turns 7500.doesn't seem to pull.i'm going to try a comet white(82 eng. & 160 shift) and 10m(49.5) polaris weights.

I had a 87 exciter with a 108EXP clutch, running A1s and a silver spring. Seemed okay until I let my buddy ride it and he came back and said "should be more fun than that".

It was over reving with that setup. I did a bunch of research and I found that the Comet blue spring (I think) and the Yellow spring (not the square wire yellow one) were better choices for that sled. We also played around with some other primary weights and when the dust settled I was running 53 gram primary weights (Cat I think). It made the sled perform really well. I had guys getting of their Polaris XC800s, turning around and stating "I can't believe you're still on my tail!!!" Oh an I had guys telling me that my sled could never pull that much primary weight. They changed their minds once they rode it!

If my memory serves me right, I think 7400 RPM is your target and the HP drops off very quickly if you exceed that. Over reving will kill your perfomance.

The nice thing about the Comet clutch is you can try Polaris weights, Cat weights etc. I broke two silver springs on my sled until I dialed the clutching in with the yellow spring and the Cat weights.

Good luck!!

did it have decent top end?mine does about 80 now and it seems to earn it turning 7500.did you run the stock helix?i tried polaris s53's but they hit on the spider so the thing wanted to creep ahead.so i don't know what will fit and what will hit.i've always had polaris' so those tuning parts are more readily available to me.

just got back from a little rip and it still seems to want a bit more weight.i have a white comet spring w/ 48.5 gram a2's.

i have a set of 10-54's i can try.if it can turn that much weight it should pull good and get respectable top end i would think.how heavy a weight did it come with from the factory?or am i comparing apples and oranges?

psi paper i have for pipe on exciter says to use the 10a weight cause it is the only profile to fit the exciter curve with their pipe they say to add 4 grams to weight for a total of 59. so i was thinking you will be close stock 82m weights were 48.8 grams but comets have a different characteristic so you really cant go by exact weight.say,s to use polaris pink spring, but i think your silver is pretty close

all i could find in that range were 10-56's and it seems to pull alot better.turns 7200-7300 thruout the run.if you get going around 50 to 55,let off and nail it, the backshift seems to suffer a bit but overall i'm gaining.10-54's or 10a's may be the ticket.how should the secondary be setup?do you or someone you know have a single pipe for sale?i'd like bender, aaen or psi.

stock setting i believe is A-2 50 degrees. B-2 60 degrees would be the next step up was looking for a pipe myself but just won one on e-bay. just keep lookin on there. what is the 79 srx project sled you have?you need anything for it? just checked e-bay under yamaha exciter exhaust pipe and there is 2 pipes on there. 1 bender and 1 psi pipe

Forget the pipe. If you are feeling handy and want a BIG gain from your exciter - cut out 10 mm from the y-pipe and 10mm from the exhaust pipe where it meets the y-pipe. Then get it spinning to 7950 because that's where its going to be making the power.
