After further inspection it turns out that Yamaha installed the upper and lower bearing on this Viper backwards. The black seal side was inside the case not out like all the others. The upper did not go south but the lower did. After 3400 miles with a seal blocking oil to that bearing it let loose. Thanks to all that replied to my prior post. I just wanted to let you know this is what we found. Doug
That's not backwards, that is how they are installed.

Not as I see it. the other two we looked at had the bearing installed with the race out to the case oil. My SXR also, has the race visible to the case oil. This Viper had the bearing installed with the rubber seal towards the case oil. I have not scene that at all. Doug
It is correct, that's now Yamaha does it. Oil will get thru the seal to lube the bearing and keep the shavings form the chain case out of the bearing.

hmmm... not what I have scene on past tear downs. But, I could be wrong.
Yeah, that is how they do it. Many times people will change these bearings and put the non-sealed side facing the chaincase oil thinking they are helping when really they are not. When the chain is spinning the oil is pushed away from the bearing plus metal shavings get in. When its the other way, oil can make its way to the backside of the bearing and stay between the outer seal (facing you drivers) and the, bearing keeping it lubricated all the time.
