so i bought a 1997 vmax sx 700 from a friend, the middle pistons skirt broke and went threw the bottom of the case, someone told me i could get it welded up... the crank should get the new outer bearing replaced, i have read that the 98' bearing is better and id get that and get my case machined if its fixable, if not i may have found a casing. as for the top end are these cylinders nicasil plated? and what kind of pistons should i use. there are some on ebay i believe they are spi but i am not quite sure for 160 or should i spend a bit more and get some wiseco. i have used wiseco before on my banshee, but seeing on how this motor is going to cost a fair amount then id like to be able to save a little bit of money,
OEM pistons all the way
Check the classifieds. Sometimes it is cheaper to get a clomplete motor that trying to rebuild a motor.IMO

to build or not to build
If it was me i would go with what daman says. But if you do build it i would go with oem parts. I have nothing against aftermarket, i use wiseco's in my yz 250, but it gets rings every summer and a piston every other. An engine builder in town says that aftermarkets make good power but oem has the money in development stuck into it to make it so it lasts longer than a year, month, season, weekend, race, so on and so forth. I guess its just how much preventive maintenance you feel like doing.
