I just bought a complete gp338f yamaha and wonder if anyone knows what year it would be and if its worth fixing up . It's got a broken ring or something like this that's causing the engine to lock up and not turn all the way over. I think it is a 73 model by looking through the yamaha parts fichs.

Yes I believe that is a 1973 GP338. Post a photo for me if you can. I know of one under a truck cap with less than 1000 miles on it. Seat is toast but it's all there and turns over yet.

GP338 is a 1973 sn# starts with 846
GP338F is a 1974 sn# starts with 865
GP338F is a 1974 sn# starts with 865

The F indicated 1974
