Here are some pics of my cracked cylinder wall on my 98 srx just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why it happened. was driving along at 3/4 throttle when she started to bog i let off the gas then had a big puff of burnt coolant come out of the exhaust. any ideas? sled was just rebuilt the night before with 3 replated cylinders all new pistons, rings, gaskets. had 361 kms on the new rebuild when this happened. needless to say i was pretty pissed.

OMG JON>>>>>>>>>>> #$%&*

if it were not for bad luck, you would have no luck at all.............

as to why it happened, whats the rest of the piston look like? at the top of the cylinder, is the plating chipped or burnt off right at the top, right where the ring would stop coming up to top of cylinder?

the cylinder is actually cracked in 2 spots another smaller finer one about a 1/4" next to the big one. where both cracks are there are deep grooves a 1/4" inch wide that go to about a 1/4" inch before the top of the cylinder. the grooves are about an inch and a half long, the larger crack is about an inch long and the smaller crack is only about a half inch. i'm thinking a chunk of ring wedged between the piston and cylinder wall and flexed it out and the cracks took the path of least resistance wich was where the grooves were in the cylinder. dunno for sure what happened first the coolant leak and cracks or the grooves. if the wall cracked first then again the wall would flex and the chunks of crap would go to the crack cause that's where they would have more room from the cylinder wall flexing. the piston doesn't look lean there are chunks missing from the exhaust side but it doesn't look melted away like a lean burndown. they look more like they broke off maybe from being cooled quickly from the coolant leak. i dunno again i'm at my wits end about to give up. didn't have a chance to check the other pistons and they're at the cottage so won't know till the weekend again. if they are lean as well though maybe that would explain why my sxr blew too maybe we got bad gas somewhere we both filled cause we always used the same pump.

I will help you with doing another cylinder for you if you find a used 98 cylinder, just send it to mewith your old cracked one and I will do it no charge, you have had enough bad luck to last anyone a long time.

lol thanks Don really appreciate it. i will let you know i sent all my messed up stuff to adrien bernard in quebec canada not sure if they can fix the crack in the cylinder wall or not. but if they can't then i will find a used one and send it your way with my old one. thanks again for all the input. any ideas on what might have caused that crack just plain failure or was it the bad piston that hurt the wall. what came first the chicken or the egg? lol

looks like ur ring cought the exhaust port. its hard to tell but u didnt put the ring gaps towrds the exhaust by acident did u? u know put the piston on backwards. looks like the rings opened up into the exhaust port and then cought and snaped off and bounced around and jamed in between the cylinder and piston

I would have to see the cylinder to tell or even throw out a idea, thats not something I see alot of, cracked cylinders, tuff to diagnose from the pics.

ya i figured. just called the machine shop and he said they can fix the crack in the wall. hopefully it'll hold up. no piston went on the right way. does seem like something hooked though. i dunno. at this point though maybe i'll try to recoupe my money by holding a yamaha 700 triple rebuilding timed race and placing bets on myself lol. man i can do these in my sleep now (not always a good thing)
