2002 Viper stock.

Last couple of rides I have noticed in the midrange the sled revs with a rough sound. Much like if the engine is cold you get that rumble. So I put new plugs in it and the sound went away for about 120miles. yesterday I went for a ride and the sound came back. Also noticed im burning about 7 liters more fuel (compared to friends sleds from previous comparisons). Coming home yesterday after a 250 mile ride I noticed the last 50 miles if I slowly brought up the throttle I couldn't get past 60mph with the revs sticking at about 7750rpm. I would then let off and punch it and it would be fine, then go slowly again and it would stick. Also when sticking the engine is bogging down with a low bass sound. I feel since the gas mileage is affected and the odd time it bogs something is holding back. On the low end the hp is there and it runs fine. Its just the annoying noise combined with the odd bog down that puzzles me. The valves have been cleaned about 400 miles ago.

Any suggestions??

I had the exact same scenario on my 97 sx. Did the carbs three times, checked the reeds, checked comp, clucthes, stator, fuel pump, swapped out cdi. Sparkplugs would only last about 20 miles and then one was completely wet ,one was black and one was choc brown.Fuel milage went into the toilet and power was down.Mid range was bad ,the motor stumbled bad like that low bass sound.Could only get about 7000 rpms and 70mph.Was told to check the only thing left which was the sparkplug caps. Yep two were toast. Change all three and it was good to go. Hope this helps.

Yup I agree sounds like either stator or spark plug caps. Both can easily be checked for tolerance if you have a service manual.
