I picked up an immaculate "old" SS440 from Wisconsin. Great starter for my daughter and she loves riding it. But I can not seem to get anyone to set up the carb and likley clutching for Colorado. Anyone have any experience with this? It runs but has no power, lift up the track and get it rotating and away she can go but still is not the SS440 I remember as a kid with no power. Compression etc all looks great. If anyone can help or direct me the the friend of a friend with knowledge please let me know.
Thanks,
Kyle

sounds like u need to do some clutch work just take the seconary off and check the buttons and clean it up maybe u don,t have enough spring load on ur secodary. on the hard packed snow they would give a srv a run for the money , is ur idle ciciut to rich and its loading up with fuel, what is the rpm on clutch engage ment and ur rpm wide open

clean the primary while you are at it and check the chaincase. might have a bad bearing. the one my brother has has a hole in the bottom of the chain case with a peice of cardboard siliconed in there to hold the grease my uncle packed it with. still scary fast as he almost took out my truck with it on grass as it picked and carried the skis for a good 100' before he got it stopped.

Sounds like you need to do some clutch and carb adjustments. Find out which style of clutch is on it. If it's the same as the old phazer (I think it is) then you'll lots of spring and weight options available.
For jetting I'd drop the mains about 10 numbers (if it's got a 140 in it try a 130) and see how close it is. Going from WI to CO is quite a change so its going to need a lot less fuel. You'll probably have to up the pilots a size or two as well to get it to idle and drive away like you want.
Good luck.

i'd go down about 30, if you can find a keihin carb off a 340 yamaha (enticer or exciter) engine take the jets out of it and try those they use the same size carb just a smaller main jet, the clutch off the same engine but will engage at 3500 instead of 3000 and you will notice the difference, then turn the air screw on the top open 2 turns
Appreciate the ideas...
I am working on the clutch now and also the jets... I did not think the clutch could cause that much loss in power but general consensus says it does. I liked the comment extreme4max had with the SRV as that is the one I remember riding back in the early 80's back home in Saskatchewan, after graduating off the Golden Ghost 30. You are right, a neighbor had an SS440 I remember how close it would keep up with the SRV. I bought this sled for more nostolgic reasons but seariously I thought of just getting a 90's Phazer and my 11 year old daughter is not about to give up her SS without a fight. She calls it "Super Sled" Once I get this figured out I will post how it came out. I will also try and post a picture of this sled as it is like new.
